2025 is proving to be an exciting year for fans of mecha—giant robots often featured in anime. The year kicked off with the runaway success of the Macross, is stepping up to the plate with a major announcement of its own.

Information about an all-new Macross anime series is set to be revealed on March 2, 2025, during a live event titled Macross × Sunrise New Project Special, which will be streamed on Japan’s ABEMA service. This special program will also feature guest appearances from two iconic voice actresses—Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee from Macross Frontier) and Minori Suzuki (Freyja Wion from Macross Delta).

The Macross series began in 1982 with Robotech. Over its 40-year history, the franchise has built a devoted fanbase, particularly for its music, which has transcended the anime genre. But it hasn’t always been an easy anime to watch for fans overseas.

That finally changed in 2021 with a comprehensive agreement between Big West, Studio Nue, and Harmony Gold USA, allowing for the franchise’s international expansion. In 2024, it was announced that all 18 Macross titles would be available on Disney+, making it the exclusive platform to stream the full series in Japan and worldwide—though some titles remain region-locked.
