While Netflix has been distributing original programming since the early 2010s, it wasn't until more recent years that the streaming service upped its films of a certain well-known genre: teen rom-coms.
Whether you love them or hate them, they're all over Netflix. Because of this, we thought it was time to look at the best and worst teen rom-coms out there using the fan scores on IMDb.
IMDb has assigned every recent Netflix film in this category a star rating based on the votes of ed s on a scale of 1 to 10. We'll be counting down to the movie with the highest score.
Before we get started, it's worth noting that the rom-coms we're looking at here are the ten most recent ones to be released. This is because they all acquired significant buzz, even if the talk wasn't for good reasons.
Additionally, we're using the term "rom-com" pretty loosely. Some of these films will venture into drama territory, but as long a movie centers on teens and features a romantic plot (or subplot), we'll add it to the list.
With that said, it's time to dive into the details of the most popular original Netflix teen rom-coms, as determined by the fans at IMDb.
Tall Girl (2019) 5.2
Kicking us off is this romantic comedy about Jodi Kreyman, a 16-year-old who is insecure about her height. Standing at 6 ft. 1 1/2 in. tall, she's forced to deal with insults from her fellow classmates and her parents' unsolicited attempts to help her fit in. However, when an even taller Swedish foreign exchange student shows up at school, she begins to overcome her fears for a shot at love.
Viewers were unimpressed by Tall Girl's one-dimensional characters and weak story. If you're in the mood for tacky, however, you've hit a gold mine.
The Last Summer (2019): 5.5
The Last Summer follows a group of post-high school students who navigate the craziness of their last few months before college. While some of the teens deal with financial insecurity, others attempt to figure out what their relationships will look like once they reach adulthood.
Though the story wasn't as substantial as it tried to be, its familiar cast, including Riverdale's K.J. Apa, attracted viewers.
Let Is Snow (2019) 5.8
Adapted from the young adult novel of the same name written by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle, Let It Snow follows the teens of a small Midwestern town who are forced to figure out their relationships one snowy Christmas Eve. While Julie Reyes gets caught up with pop star Stuart Bale, Tobin must it how he really feels to his best friend. Meanwhile, Dorrie must deal with a pal of her own who treats her differently in public.
The narrative was weak, but the holiday fluff was enough for some viewers.
The Perfect Date (2019): 5.8
Rising star Noah Centineo has become synonymous with teen Netflix originals. One of his many roles came in the 2019 rom-com, The Perfect Date.
The story has Brooks Rattigan hoping to get into Yale despite not having the connections or money he needs. To earn a little cash, Brooks creates an app that lets girls use him as a plus-one in exchange for money. However, when his feelings get stuck on the first girl he goes out with, things grow more complicated.
While The Perfect Date is a little cheesy and uneven, it had its engaging moments.
Sierra Burgess Is A Loser (2018) 5.9
Yup, Noah Centineo returns for this one. However, he plays the love interested instead of the leading role, which is instead played by Stranger Things' Shannon Purser.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser follows the titular smart but unpopular character who sets her eyes on the handsome football star of her high school, Jamey. Though Sierra feels she doesn't have a chance at love with him, this all changes after popular girl Veronica gives him Sierra's number instead of her own. The girls soon make a plan; If Sierra helps Veronica with homework, Veronica will help Sierra keep up her catfishing scheme.
Many fans found the narrative to be morally problematic. The film's charming cast, however, kept audiences interested.
The Kissing Booth (2018): 6.1
The Kissing Booth's Elle has always been best friends with Lee Flynn. One of the rules of their friendship is that they'll never date each other's relatives, but this promise becomes harder to keep after Lee's bad boy older brother, Noah, ends up kissing Elle during their school's kissing booth fundraiser.
Though some critics believed the film was sexist and riddled with cliches, many general audiences still found the story to have strong entertainment value.
The film's sequel, The Kissing Booth 2, is set to be released sometime this summer.
To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020): 6.1
Jenny Han's best-selling To All the Boys book series has already received two film installments, and the final one is on the way. The second of these, P.S. I Still Love You, follows Lara Jean as she embarks on her new relationship with Peter Kavinsky. Though the two should be happy, things get messy after Lara Jean's old flame, John Ambrose, begins volunteering at a retirement home with her. Meanwhile, Peter continues to spend time with his ex.
Though the script wasn't as silky as the original, fans were happy to revisit the charms of Lana Condor and Noah Centineo.
All The Bright Places (2020): 6.5
The least rom-com (more romantic drama) entry on this list is All The Bright Places. Being that the film just released, we thought it was worth mentioning.
All the Bright Places sees Violet Markey still mourning her sister's death. Meanwhile, Theodore Finch struggles to mend his own wounds inflicted by the past. Though he can't make himself feel better, he set out to give Violet a brighter outlook on life.
Though films that cover mental health issues struggle to please everyone, many viewers appreciated the heart of this story.
Dumplin' (2018): 6.6
Though Dumplin''s Willowdean Dickson has always stood in the shadows of her beauty queen mom, she decides to stand up for herself by entering Miss Teen Bluebonnet, even though she doesn't fit the standard pageant mold. When Will isn't trying to take over the stage, she's trying to deal with insecurities — especially those that come after her co-worker at the local diner asks her out.
Sweet, positive, and fun, this coming-of-age story received a lot of love.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018): 7.2
Topping off the list is none other than the original To All The Boys I've Loved Before.
In this film, the private love letters of high school junior Lara Jean are mysteriously sent out to her former crushes. In order to keep her sister's ex-boyfriend from knowing how she feels, Lara Jean creates a fake relationship with popular boy Peter.
The teen romance had no problem enchanting viewers and earning the aforementioned sequels.
