NCIS franchise has been one of the most successful on network television, thanks largely to its detailed narrative arcs, interesting characters, and plot twists. And the season finale is set to bring one of the most shocking events the franchise has produced to date.
Per TV Line, Valderrama has confirmed, during an interview with CBS Mornings, that the season finale is set to feature the shocking death of a major character, and that it will be unrelated to the Case of the Week victim. The Nick Torres actor talks about how the episode's death will be "earth-shattering and really heartbreaking,” and revealed it will be “somebody very close to us,” before also stating that the death will set the tone for the next season.
What This Means For NCIS Moving Forward
The Shock Death Will Take The Show To New Places
NCIS season 22 looks like it's going to conclude with an explosive ending, following the major character death. Valderrama's suggestion that it is set to shape the direction of NCIS season 23 is exciting, and this could mark a completely new direction for the show. NCIS has seen several key character deaths over the years, with the most recent being the tragic death of Ducky, which came in one of the best episodes of NCIS season 21. Now, with season 22's finale set to bring another devastating loss, it's safe to say that the show's future is going to be deeply impacted by this tragedy.
The NCIS season 22 finale airs Monday, May 5 on CBS at 9 p.m. ET.
While it is unclear which character might be killed off, and Valderrama seemingly ruled out Nick, there are a lot of names in the running. What is certain is that the future of the show will be impacted by this major character death, with the actor talking about the need to "disrupt the peace," and set the tone for the season. The show has also reached the stage where it needs to change things from its formulaic nature, and evolving into a franchise that is more unpredictable and attention-grabbing is going to help the show thrive.
Our Take On Which NCIS Character Could Die In The Season 22 Finale
There Are A Number Of Contenders
There are a number of NCIS characters who could be in danger of being killed off in the finale, with Jessica Knight, LaRoche, or even Torres among the candidates. Certainly, fan-favorite Kasie Hines feels like the most unlikely choice, but this could be precisely what puts her in the running. Director Vance, one of the longest-running characters in the franchise, would probably be the most impactful death, but given that the finale promo shows Alden Parker on his knees with a gun to his head, he feels like the most likely NCIS finale death at this point.
