Though many fans were disappointed that Nathan Fillion's cameo as Wonder Man didn't make it into Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Set on Earth, a scene was filmed that featured a background shot of the Simon Williams Film Festival, where several posters of Williams' films could be seen, one of which was a biopic on Tony Stark. Fillion portrays Williams, who in Marvel Comics is Wonder Man, a superhero who moonlights as a Hollywood action star. Unfortunately, the scene had to be cut.

Wonder Man is one of the Avengers' most iconic who has yet to receive a live-action appearance in the MCU. Some of the character's history was hinted at in the posters. One poster was of a movie called Arkon, which is actually the name of a villain in the Marvel Universe who had movies made about him without his permission. In the comics, Wonder Man played a villain in Arkon IV, which drew him into conflict with the real Arkon. Another poster is a close-up of Nathan Fillion with red eyes. Comic readers familiar with the character know that Wonder Man's red eyes are one of his most recognized traits.

Wonder Man in Marvel Comics

Though Wonder Man is a member of the Avengers, he also has connections to the Guardians of the Galaxy, which could be the reason for the cameo. A alternate future version of the character called Hollywood ed the original team at one point.

In speaking with The Ara Show on KISS FM, the Castle and Firefly star talked about his cameo in the movie.

“If you know the Marvel Universe, Simon Williams becomes Wonder Man, becomes an Avenger. So, he’s part of that universe. It was a neat little Easter egg, it was a neat little piece of the universe. It didn’t get into the movie. That’s fine. That happens all the time. I still had the same wonderful experience. But moving forward, I don’t know, let me see what we can do with this opportunity. That’s just a cleverly disguised opportunity. Am I right?”

James Gunn has stated that Nathan Fillion's cameo can be considered canon, meaning that to him, Fillion is Wonder Man regardless of the fact that the scene didn't make into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Since Fillion seems to be on board with taking the role to the next level, we'll have to wait and see if anything comes of this "opportunity." The character has a rich history with Scarlet Witch and the Vision that could be enough to justify an appearance in one of the Avengers movies.
