For better or worse, Sasuke and Sakura are among Sakura and Sasuke might be getting their own Naruto spinoff book, it's evident from the sequel series that their relationship has some serious problems.

Ever since her introduction, Sakura has been obsessed with Sasuke. This led to much of Sakura's character development in the first part of Naruto being focused on her learning to be independent from others and, more specifically, Sasuke. Unfortunately for her, not only would her feelings for Sasuke never really fade, his disinterest in her would eventually evolve into bitter resentment. Sasuke once infamously tried to kill Sakura when she had her back turned to him, though he would later apologize for this. By the end of Naruto, Sasuke had finally seen the light and seemingly made amends. It all set the stage for him to not only be a better person but more specifically a good partner for Sakura. Unfortunately, that's not how things turn out by the time of Boruto.

Taking place twelve years after  follows the next generation of ninja. Sakura and Sasuke are married in this future and have a daughter together named Sarada. Unfortunately for Sarada though, she barely knows Sasuke at all, as he has been away on missions throughout much of her life. Despite her marriage, Sakura has basically been forced to raise Sarada as a single parent. Worse yet, Sakura feels compelled to cover for Sasuke's past, often refusing to answer Sarada's questions that might clue her into the fact that Sasuke essentially committed war crimes.

While Sasuke is undoubtedly a better person by the time of Boruto, it's clear that his relationship with Sakura just doesn't work. Sasuke's reason for always being away on missions is that he wants to atone for the many crimes he committed back in Naruto. That might be irable, but what's less so is basically abandoning his wife and daughter to make amends. All of it serves to make Sakura a much more tragic character than she needed to be. Her whole arc in Naruto was focused on her crush on Sasuke. Naruto's flash-forward might have made it seem like she finally got the happy ending she always wanted. It's sad to see her still pining for Sasuke more than a decade later when they both have a child together. Upon seeing how much his apparent indifference has hurt his daughter, he does make an effort to be more involved in his family's life. It would be a touching gesture if it didn't come a decade too late.

Still, though Boruto has its flaws, this relationship isn't inherently one of them. It would have been easy to give the two the happy ending that many fans wanted for them. Instead, Boruto makes their relationship much more complex than that. Boruto might have made Sakura and Sasuke's Naruto relationship more tragic, but it also made it much more interesting.
