Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter #390a Quirk marriage, as Endeavor tried to combine his flame Quirk with his wife's ice Quirk for the ultimate fire Quirk . While his first three children didn't seem to benefit from both, Shoto did, effectively split down the middle between fire and ice.

In chapter 390, as he races to stop Dabi from exploding and killing hundreds, Shoto pulls off an incredible ice-based super move, the Great Glacial Aegir. It's powerful enough that it's now overwhelmed Dabi's fire abilities twice, back in chapter 352 and here in 390. However, Shoto's comments afterward are what's most interesting.

Shoto Todoroki's Quirk Is More Ice Than Fire

My Hero Academia's Shoto implies Toya, not him, is the perfect flame .

After stopping Dabi, Shoto is thankful to see that his family is there, as he was worried that his ice power alone may not have been enough. He then praises Dabi's Quirk, suggesting that he was Endeavor's "masterpiece creation" all along since Shoto claims he'll never be able to use flames as intense as Dabi's. Despite his worries, though, Shoto was safely able to extinguish Dabi's most powerful flames. It seems to indicate that Shoto's ice powers are in fact stronger than his flame powers, making "Half-Cold Half-Hot" a bit of a misnomer for his Quirk.

Looking back, it actually makes a lot of sense that Shoto's ice powers are superior. In the early days of My Hero Academia, Shoto exclusively used and trained with his ice abilities to spite his father, so it's logical that he would be more skilled with ice than fire. Shoto's ice powers were so intense at that time that he was walking around with half his body frozen at any given moment, which suggests they were still tough to control. It also makes thematic sense since Dabi is so centered on using his father's fire techniques against him that of course, it would be Shoto's ice half that would finally overpower him.

Shoto's Quirk Evolution In My Hero Academia Gives Closure To The Todoroki's Tragic History

If Endeavor's goal was to achieve the ultimate fire Quirk, then perhaps Dabi was a success by that metric in the end. However, it's the combination of both fire and ice that made victory possible, even if the balance wasn't 50/50 between the two powers. Shoto forged a different path than his father, and that's what allowed him to develop these ice-based techniques, which Endeavor had only been able to see as a means of cooling off. My Hero Academia's Shoto may be more ice than fire, but that's exactly the kind of hero this situation called for.
