Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Murder Mystery 2!
Nick and Audrey Spitz return to solve a kidnapper plot, and Murder Mystery 2's ending delivers a few big twists and surprises in the resolution of the crime. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston returned for another whodunnit mystery on Netflix that picks up four years after the original film. The premise of the sequel sees Nick and Audrey travel to a private island for a wedding of a former friend, only for the groom to be kidnapped the night of the festivities. It sparks a massive search for who kidnapped The Maharajah (Adele Akhtar), which makes the cast in Murder Mystery 2 as Nick and Audrey's new suspect list.
The entirety of the sequel picks up four years after Murder Mystery's ending and sees Nick and Audrey attempt to make careers as investigators/private detectives. The kidnapping of The Maharajah takes a surprising turn for the amateur crime solvers as they eventually become caught in the middle of the conspiracy and viewed as suspects by MI6 operative Connor Miller (Mark Strong). It takes a globetrotting adventure for Nick and Audrey to clear their names and expose the real people responsible for kidnapping Maharajah for a $70 million ransom. It all plays out in the final few minutes of Murder Mystery 2's ending. Here are the twists and sequel teases explained.
Murder Mystery 2's Kidnapper Plan Explained (& Everyone Who Did It)
Connor Miller and Saira (Kuhoo Verma) are ultimately proven to be Murder Mystery 2's kidnappers. They are correctly discovered through Nick and Audrey's investigation to be responsible and working together as part of a complicated plot. The plan to kidnap Maharajah is initially set into motion by Saira, his sister. She seemingly hires Connor and his team to help kidnap her brother, who is on the verge of inheriting the family fortune. Since she knows her idiot brother will not use the money wisely, Saira wanted to kidnap him in an exchange for the high ransom that could be paid.
The actual plan to kidnap Maharajah in Murder Mystery 2's story comes after Saira failed to kill him in Mumbai. The plan is set into motion when Saira begins a distraction by killing her brother's bodyguard and then burning the clothes used to conceal her identity. While everyone at the wedding is distracted thinking that the bodyguard is Maharajah, Connor and his men take the groom to a boat to transport him off the island. This allows them to call back later on and demand a high ransom, which is meant to be exchanged for Maharajah in Paris.
The Murder Mystery 2 plot becomes more complicated when Connor's plan to get the money goes awry. Nick and Audrey hand over the $70 million to Connor thinking they have just killed some of the kidnappers, and he fakes his death by having his car explode while inside a hidden compartment in the back. However, the man tasked with taking the briefcase from the burning vehicle is then killed by Countess Sekou (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Imani (Zurin Villanueva). It is then up to Nick and Audrey to get the money back and arrange a final meeting between them, the suspects, and the kidnappers, which is where they expose Connor's plan.
It is not until after Connor dies for real in Murder Mystery 2's ending that they determine that he was not working alone. Audrey notices that Saira's henna is smeared after the commotion and pieces together that the dye is what she saw on the burning clothes that belonged to the person who started the distraction at Maharajah's wedding. This is when Saira's plan changes, as she reverts to wanting to kill her brother and shoots at him, only to hit Colonel Ulenga (John Kani) instead.
Why The Pilot Turns On Nick & Audrey In Murder Mystery 2's Ending
Murder Mystery 2's ending brings a surprising close to Nick and Audrey's story, as the pilot hired by Maharajah turns on them. As they are approaching a new destination, the pilot drops his accent and draws a gun on them as he demands the suitcase full of money. The twist reveals that the kind pilot has really been working a long con. By working for Vikram, the man from Jersey has been waiting for the day that he could rob someone. Once he was asked to deliver a $3 million bag that contained another $10M in cash, the pilot must decide that Nick and Audrey are who he will rob.
How The Murder Mystery 2 Ending Sets Up Murder Mystery 3
There is some brief setup for Murder Mystery 3 in the Murder Mystery 2 ending. It leaves Nick and Audrey in a place where they have to stop their helicopter from crashing as they approach their new destination. It's possible that after solving murder and kidnapping cases the characters will try their hand at a robbery. They could quickly track down the helicopter pilot and get their money back before stumbling upon a bigger case that they can solve. Since the series is still called Murder Mystery, though, Adam Sandler's next Netflix sequel could see Nick and Audrey investigate someone who dies as part of a theft.
Why Would Murder Mystery 2's Kidnappers Only Talk To Nick?
Murder Mystery 2 establishes early on that Nick is the only person that the kidnappers on the phone want to speak to. Since these people work for Connor, the likely explanation is that talking to Nick on the phone is how Connor wants to keep them involved to create more incriminating evidence against them. He plans on framing Nick and Audrey for the kidnapping and potential murder of Maharajah, and he even uses them to increase the ransom amount. It could have been easier for Connor to handle it all himself, but that also may have complicated his plans too much.
What Happened To Saira After Kidnapper Twist Reveal?
One aspect of Murder Mystery 2's ending that does remain a bit of a mystery is what happened to Saira. After she is revealed to be part of the kidnapping plot and tries to kill her brother, the movie does not show Saira again once Claudette knocks her out. This makes her fate a bit ambiguous for the future. It is unlikely that Claudette's hit killed Saira, so her story most likely ends with her being arrested for her plot to kidnap her brother. This should mean that Saira spends the next several years after Murder Mystery 2 in prison for the crimes she committed, which include attempted murder.
How Did Susan Get In The Eiffel Tower (& Where Was Gary?)
The chaos of the kidnapper unveil and Connor's threat to blow up Maharajah and the Eiffel Tower is momentarily paused when a woman named Susan (Jillian Bell) comes to where they are located looking for an old romantic interest. It is a surprising moment to include in Murder Mystery 2's ending, as it was previously explained that the restaurant was bought out so Nick, Audrey, and the suspects could be alone. This indicates that no one else could meet them, but Susan's appearance means that anyone could have used the elevator to come across the scene.
The other question to emerge from Susan's visit is about the whereabouts of Gary, the man she met 10 years before and promised to meet back here after all these years if they still loved each other. However, Gary is nowhere to be found in the ending sequence. It is unclear if Gary did visit and was escorted out early, forgot about the meeting, or if he did find love with someone else. Luckily for Susan, she appears to find a new love in Murder Mystery 2's ending with Inspector Delacroix (Danny Boon).
