The beloved 1960's sitcom Rob Zombie's reboot) has also been available on streaming sites like Netflix off and on in the past, but can no longer be found on the streaming giant.
Airing its first episode in September of 1964, The Munsters quickly became a ratings phenomenon. The sitcom followed the comedic exploits of a monstrous family of ghouls who, despite their appearance and gothic lifestyle, consider themselves to be as normal as any American family. The cast included father Herman (Fred Gwynne), mother Lily (Yvonne De Carlo), her father "Grandpa" (Al Lewis), Herman and Lily's son Eddie (Butch Patrick), and their non-monster cousin Marilyn (Beverley Owen and Pat Priest). Thanks to NBC's role in producing The Munsters, the series was allowed to utilize the legendary makeup designs created by Jack Pierce for the classic Universal Monster films, including Frankenstein's Monster and Dracula.
The Munsters success created a merchandising boom that captured the imaginations of monster-crazy kids around the country. However, the arrival of 1966's Batman effectively sunk the show's second season, ultimately leading to its cancelation after 70 episodes and one feature film. After this, the show was able to find renewed success in syndication, leading to a second film and multiple reboot attempts. The property was recently announced to be getting its long-awaited remake thanks to director Rob Zombie, making this the perfect time to watch (or re-watch) the series that started it all.
The Munsters Isn't On Netflix, Hulu, Or Prime
Surprisingly, the original The Munsters isn't currently available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Although Netflix has offered the show multiple times in the past, and several other streamers have included it on a limited basis during the autumn season, none of these sites host the series at this time. The reason for this comes down to Universal Pictures, which has begun migrating its properties to its own streaming service.
Where To Watch The Munsters Online
As of summer 2021, The Munsters can be streamed exclusively on Universal's streaming service Peacock. All 70 episodes across seasons 1 and 2 are included, and utilize the latest high-quality transfers for optimum picture/sound quality. The series (along with many of the original Universal Monster films that inspired it) can be streamed for free without a subscription to Peacock, but expect to see a few ads play during each episode.
Where To Rent & Buy The Munsters Online
The Munsters is also available to purchase digitally on multiple platforms. While it might not be available free with Prime, the series can still be purchased to stream on Amazon for $1.99 per episode or $24.99 per season, meaning that the entire series can be bought digitally for around $50. Both seasons of The Munsters are also available through the iTunes Store, Xfinity Stream, and YouTube TV.
