A Scorpion King reemerged as a terrible CGI monster. The character was so popular, Johnson returned for a prequel in 2002, which received four straight-to-DVD sequels where new actors inherited the role.
The Scorpion King movies portray Johnson's Mathayus as a heroic figure, but in The Mummy Returns, he's a villain who is ultimately slain. With Fraser on the trail of a comeback thanks to the movies like The Whale, there's renewed interest in a fourth Mummy also. Johnson has also publicly voiced his for Fraser's return and is also produced a Scorpion King reboot. While it doesn't seem to be on the cards currently, a legacy Mummy sequel that finally unites Fraser and Johnson onscreen would all but guarantee a big audience. That, and it can undo Mathayus' bleak fate in the saga and redeem his villainous ways.
The Scorpion King Lasted Longer Than The Mummy Franchise
Being his first starring role, Johnson has affection for both The Scorpion King and movies. That said, his stardom is on another plane entirely from the early 2000s, and given his stacked plate of projects, a fourth Mummy wouldn't be his first priority. That said, if he felt audiences really wanted it, he might give it some consideration. What's interesting to note about The Scorpion King saga is that it actually outlived its parent franchise. The Mummy ended after three movies, while The Scorpion King ran for five, closing out on 2018's The Scorpion King: Book Of Souls.
The Scorpion King has also one of the most tangled timelines in movie history. For example, The Scorpion King 2 is a prequel to Scorpion King, which itself is a prequel to The Mummy Returns - which is already a sequel to a remake. Scorpion King 3 - which featured Dave Bautista - is a direct sequel to The Scorpion King, evening the continuity out somewhat. That's another reason to give the character some redemption since it's tough to ask fans of the series to invest in six movies that end with him being cursed, turned into a CGI scorpion monster and presumably sent to the underworld for eternity.
Fraser And Johnson Have Never Shared A Scene - Yet
A strange quirk of fate has seen Fraser and Johnson appear in three different franchises: The Mummy, Journey and G.I. Joe. Despite this, they never actually worked together. By the time Fraser's Rick O'Connell battles the Scorpion King he's a computer-generated creature, while Fraser only appeared in the first outings of both Journey and G.I. Joe, while Johnson was introduced in their sequels. A fourth Mummy movie seeing Rick battling against a resurrected Mathayus is a concept that sells itself; it's a legacy sequel that builds upon the franchise's established backstory while placing Johnson front and scene.
