Xavier's school is no more, Krakoa has fallen... and young mutants need a place where they can safely belong. Enter NYX, a new X-Men series starring Kamala Khan and Laura Kinney, following a group of fan-favorite mutant youth as they pave a path forward after the destruction of their utopia.
"This is mutant community. This is mutant pride. THIS IS NYX!"
Taking to the mean streets of New York City, these mutant heroes will need to learn who they are and how to evolve in a post-Krakoa world, dealing with the harsh truths of living on a planet where Orchis has made mutants more hated and feared than ever.
Marvel's District X from New X-Men, specifically following the adventures of Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Sophie Cuckoo, Prodigy, and Anole, a roster seen in Sara Pichelli's gorgeous cover for NYX #1.
Like the 2000s groundbreaking original series, NYX won’t shy away from reflecting the harsh realities of life as a mix of iconic and fan-favorite mutants reenter a world filled with bigotry, mistrust, and misinformation. Free from the X-Men’s guidance and Krakoa’s protection, they’ll shut out the noise and overcome the hate by doing what they do best—EVOLVING. But if you can count on anything, it’s that mutants are never all in agreement, and some are having a really hard time letting Krakoa go…
This is a book about mutants living past the end of their world and into a new beginning. This is Ms. Marvel embracing her mutant life in the neon streets of the Lower East Side. This is Anole trying to keep his head above water. This is Wolverine in the shadows of Bushwick, protecting her own. This is Prodigy writing history as it happens—and Sophie Cuckoo finding her own way. The news reports are bleak. The streets feel dangerous. There’s something lurking underground. Evil coming from every direction. But they’re determined to make it. This is mutant community. This is mutant pride. THIS IS NYX!
Kamala Khan's Mutant Identity Will Continue To Be Explored
Anole, Prodigy, Wolverine, and Sophie Cuckoo help round out the roster for NYX
Lanzing and Kelly's NYX will carry the torch of Krakoa while allowing a group of beloved young mutants to find a new footing in the world as heroes, mutants, and citizens of New York City. Fans loved it when the Krakoan Era showed personal stories of mutant growth and exploration in their new nation, and NYX appears to be depicting a more intimate glimpse into the lives of mutants in a post-Krakoa era. Marvel has revealed that NYX will explore how these young mutants, "...navigate young adulthood, discrimination, and threats bent on shattering human-mutant relations for good."
"This isn't a book about the X-Men. This is a book about mutants."
Ms. Marvel's mutant identity has been a major part of the Fall of X, and NYX will see Kamala move from New Jersey to the Big Apple, learning to embrace her newfound mutant community in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Laura Kinney, who controversially starred in the original NYX series, will become a new Brooklyn hero, saving mutants from harm on the streets of Bushwick. Meanwhile, Anole will become a bartender at the city's most popular bar, Prodigy will become a historical record keeper of mutant history, and Sophie Cuckoo will separate from her identical sisters to find her own way for the first time in her complicated life.
The Original NYX Was A Controversial Series
Laura Kinney's portrayal in the series was heavily criticized
The original NYX series, which stood for "District X, New York City," was a divisive but gorgeously illustrated depiction of the harsh realities young mutants had to face living in NYC during the early 2000s. An unflinching look at abuse and tragedy, NYX was extremely controversial for its introduction and portrayal of Laura Kinney as an underage runaway forced into sex work by a violent pimp. Laura went on to become a central figure in X-Men comics, so it is exciting to see Wolverine in a new NYX comic where she is already an established and respected hero.
NYX writers Lanzing and Kelly have said that their new NYX is inspired by the original, as well as Young Avengers and Runaways, two acclaimed Marvel series that focus on young heroes dealing with personal issues as well as heroics. It is exciting to see that Kamala Khan will remain part of the X-Men franchise in their newest era, as well as the possibility that Kamala might end up forming a NYC-based team with Laura, Anole, Prodigy, and Sophie.
NYX #1 from Marvel Comics debuts in stores on July 24th, 2024.
