Warning: Spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 1

Ms. Marvel makes no secret of Kamala Khan’s worship of Captain Marvel. Her iration of the character was on full display in the premiere episode of her Disney+ series. Though Kamala clearly has an appreciation for the Avengers in general, it’s obvious that Carol is her favorite.

How Ms. Marvel episode 1 explored Kamala’s obsession with Captain Marvel raises questions about why she holds the hero in such high regard. As Kamala herself itted, Carol didn’t remain on Earth for long after fighting Thanos, so it’s not like she spent a whole lot of time on the planet saving people in the same way as her comic book counterpart. The comics provide hints about what characteristics Carol has that Kamala respects so much. In the comic books, Kamala once told Carol that it was her heroism, beauty, and “awesomeness” that she found so appealing. The idea that the MCU character shares a similar opinion of Carol is ed by her glowing comments about Captain Marvel in the episode’s opening scene.

As Avengers: Endgame, it’s perfectly understandable for Kamala to see something great in Captain Marvel despite her lack of a long history on Earth as a superhero. Before the show began, there was a concern that Kamala being such a huge fan of Carol wouldn’t work in the MCU since Captain Marvel spent most of her time in outer space (and apparently continues to do so). However, the MCU was quick to circumvent this potential issue in Ms. Marvel episode 1 by having Kamala acknowledge Carol’s absence from the planet. Kamala pointed out that Carol may have just wanted "a break”.

It would seem that a long-term stay on Earth was never needed for Captain Marvel to procure a massive following of fans like Kamala willing to dress up as her at Ms. Marvel’s AvengersCon. Her style, the ease in which she plowed through Thanos’ fleet, and her ability to single-handedly challenge the Mad Titan were enough to inspire Kamala. With her reputation as a cosmic MCU powerhouse and one of its strongest heroes, it's no wonder Carol was able to leave a lasting impression.
