Jennifer Lawrence its she still doesn't understand Mother! despite "sleeping with the director." Released in 2017, the psychological horror film written and directed by Darren Aronofsky follows Lawrence as the titular mother whose idyllic life with her husband at their countryside home is disrupted by the arrival of an uninvited and mysterious couple. She was asked to rate how well she understands the film and also provided some advice to actors struggling to understand their own movies. Read what Lawrence said or watch the video below:
I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director so I had CliffsNotes. So…five? Or a four. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do.
Why Mother! Is So Hard To Understand
It's understandable that Lawrence still doesn't fully comprehend Mother! considering how divisive it was at the time of its release due to its unwieldy plot, themes, and symbolism. Lawrence's pregnant character, known simply as mother, is married to a godlike man, known as Him, played by Javier Bardem. Over the course of the film, the mother is increasingly terrorized by a relentless stream of visitors who descend upon the mansion and cause chaos and destruction.
Audiences and critics struggled to get a handle on what it all meant, though the consensus opinion seems to be that it's a Biblical allegory. Though she says she doesn't fully understand the film, Jennifer Lawrence explained Mother! in a 2017 interview, saying the film "depicts the rape and torment of Mother Earth... I represent Mother Earth; Javier, whose character is a poet, represents a form of God, a creator; Michelle Pfeiffer is an Eve to Ed Harris's Adam, there's Cain and Abel and the setting sometimes resembles the Garden of Eden."
Mother! is highly symbolic and metaphorical, so it's impossible to say what the definitive interpretation would be. Instead of a Biblical allegory, another equally legitimate interpretation would be that it's an allegory for the destructive nature of humanity and the environmental impact caused by their actions. If one thing is for certain, Mother! is a thought-provoking and divisive piece of cinema, and it will continue confusing audiences for years to come.
