Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa, officially confirms its release date with an epic new trailer. In 2022, Wit Studio announced that they were producing a new sci-fi anime called Moonrise with character designs from Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, and while details have been notably sparse, that combination, alone, was enough to get many people excited about it.

It’s been three years since Moonrise was first announced, and there’s finally more to see from it. Moonrise was featured in the Netflix at Anime Japan 2025, and sure enough, Anime Japan 2025’s Netflix reaffirmed that Moonrise will premiere on April 10 with a fantastic trailer showing off the full scale of its gorgeous animation. Even with how long it’s been in development, Moonrise is set to be another great Netflix anime, and there will be plenty to be excited about come the spring 2025 anime season.

Moonrise’s New Trailer Sets It Up As One Of Netflix’s Next Big

Anime Series By Wit Studio; Created By Tow Ubukata

Moonrise’s new trailer is the first full look at the series since it was first announced, and it was great to see. Visually speaking, not only are the set and character designs all gorgeous to look at, but in of animation, Moonrise’s trailer shows that the anime will have some of the best animation of any Wit Studio production with its dynamic camerawork and overall fluidity. Series director Masashi Koizuka is set to direct Wit Studio’s One Piece remake, The One Piece, and so far, Moonrise is a great sign of what’s to come.

More than that, of course, is what the trailer shows off of the story. Moonrise’s story is about Jacob Shadow seeking revenge against the people of the Moon after his friend is killed in their war with Earth, and while the trailer didn’t show off much of that, Moonrise’s new trailer perfectly captures the intensity of its story with Jacob’s ferocious action and the rage-filled delivery of voice actor Chiaki Kobayashi. Moonrise appears to have plenty going for it on all fronts, and it will be great to see it all come together in full this April.

Moonrise’s Creator Might Be Its Biggest Weakness Waiting To Happen

Why Moonrise's Creator Might Be A Problem

As great as Moonrise’s trailer looks, however, there is a potentially major problem to be had with it: Moonrise’s head writer, Tow Ubukata. While Ubukata has made plenty of great works like Mardock Scramble and Ghost in the Shell: Arise, he’s also been responsible for projects that are mixed at best and terrible at worst, with such examples including Human Lost and the infamous Psycho- 2. Tow Ubukata’s involvement with Moonrise could mean that it will be just average at best, and with how great the visuals look, that would be disappointing to see.

That sort of sentiment is highly premature, of course. While Tow Ubukata is Moonrise’s head writer, he probably isn’t the only person responsible, and considering how Ubukata has made just as many good projects as he has bad ones, Tow Ubukata’s involvement with Moonrise shouldn’t be seen as a definitive sign that it will be a bad anime. Whatever the case, it won’t be much longer until Moonrise premieres on Netflix, and with Fullmetal Alchemist’s creator involved, it’s going to be plenty exciting.
