Summary

  • Disney+ has not yet green-lit season 3 of "Monsters at Work" despite audience popularity.
  • With a potential renewal, the next season may not take as long due to past industry delays.
  • Season 3's story may continue Tylor's quest for promotion while balancing personal life and career.

Disney and Pixar's Monsters at Work has already scared up two exciting seasons, but will the Monsters Inc. spinoff return for season 3? Debuting in 2021, the Disney+ original series is set in the same universe as the 2001 Pixar classic and follows a lowly mechanic named Tylor Tuskmon as he tries to work his way up the ranks on the Laugh Floor at Monsters Incorporated. Finding a happy medium between nostalgia and new content, Monsters at Work shines because it understands what made the original movie so beloved in the first place.

Though the critical reception has been largely middling, audience response has been much better, and the scores on Mike and Sully are secondary characters in Monsters at Work, that allows the newer characters to shine as they explore the world of Monstropolis that was only hinted at in the feature films. With such an open-ended premise, Monsters at Work could become a rare long-running hit for Disney+, and the next step is a renewal for season 3.

Monsters At Work Season 3 Is Not Confirmed

Disney+ Has Not Green-Lit Season 3 Yet

With less pressure to keep a strict schedule, Monsters at Work season 3 doesn't have to be rushed, assuming it gets a renewal at all.

The timeline Monsters at Work season 1 and 2 has been lengthy, with a nearly 3-year gap between its debut and sophomore outings. With that in mind, it isn't particularly surprising that Disney+ hasn't renewed a season 3 yet, and it might be a while before the show's fate is decided. It took nearly a year for season 2 to get a renewal order, and there's no reason to think season 3 won't follow a similar trajectory. With less pressure to keep a strict schedule, Monsters at Work season 3 doesn't have to be rushed, assuming it gets a renewal at all.

On the other hand, the third season likely won't take quite as long as its predecessor, barring another industry-wide shutdown. One thing that undoubtedly delayed Monsters at Work season 2 was the Hollywood strikes of 2023 which brought the entire movie and TV industry to a standstill for nearly the entire year. Even if Monsters at Work's renewal takes a year, it probably won't take another three years for the new episodes to arrive.

The 2023 Hollywood strikes consisted of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions striking in solidarity for better pay and fair working conditions.

Monsters At Work Season 3 Cast

Will Billy Crystal & John Goodman Return?

Monsters at Work is a fun mix of new and returning characters, and the presence of recognizable actors like Billy Crystal and John Goodman helps to elevate it above the usual TV spinoff. If the show is renewed for season 3, there's no reason to think that the entire main cast won't return, especially since the aforementioned Crystal and Goodman are ing characters. Two returns that are necessary for the show's success are Ben Feldman as ambitious mechanic Tylor Tuskmon, and Mindy Kaling as Val Little since it is their story that anchors the series.

Tylor's Quest For A Promotion Continues

Monsters outside the office in Monsters At Work

Unlike other, more serialized shows, the plot of Monsters at Work is similar to a sitcom in that it often contains bottle episodes that see the characters back where they started by the end of the story. That likely won't change going into season 3, and fans can expect to see Tylor struggling to work his way up the corporate ladder while trying to balance his personal life and burgeoning relationship with Val. Barring any major changes throughout the rest of Monsters at Work season 2, the story of season 3 will be as unpredictable as it has been throughout the first two outings.
