Role-playing game gave its workers the day off so they could play the game at launch.
Monster Hunter Rise has seen a similar level of success as the latest installment in the main series, Monster Hunter World. As of December 2020, Monster Hunter World has sold over 16 million units, and Monster Hunter Rise has shipped over 5 million units in its first few weeks since release. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury topped February's Switch sales. Combined with Monster Hunter Rise's strong March performance, it's clear the Switch is continuing to climb up in sales with these launches.
Gematsu's report of Famitsu's sales chart shows that Monster Hunter Rise dominated sales from April 5th to April 11th by a considerable margin. It sold 194,327 physical copies during that timeframe, with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury taking second place at 21,590 copies. Almost all of the games on the list are titles from Nintendo, with the Switch and Switch Lite selling 96,259 units total during that week.
Monster Hunter Rise will be receiving post-launch updates just like Monster Hunter World. Version 2.0 will release in late April and will bring at least two new monsters into the game, the elder dragon Chameleos and Apex Rathalos, a Rathalos variant that can be encountered in rampages. Monster Hunter Rise is already massive in its scope, and the more content is added into the game, the more sales that could be generated from the promotion of said content. Currently, there are two tiers of hunts players can engage in, low and high rank. If Monster Hunter Rise were to get a similar expansion like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne in the future introducing another higher tier of hunts, that could also help drive sales further.
Wherever Monster Hunter Rise goes, the one thing that's certain is that it can only go up. It's very possible that Monster Hunter Rise could match or even sur the sales of Monster Hunter World. With the Nintendo Switch still being incredibly successful in sales, the chances of it suring Monster Hunter World are fairly likely. The eventual PC release of Monster Hunter Rise will also be a contributing factor as well. For now, Monster Hunter Rise continues to remain at the top of the sales charts.
