Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the Netflix show Money Heist.
With a remake in Korea and a spinoff about Berlin in the works, there’s no questioning that Money Heist is still among Netflix’s most successful shows. The series introduced well-written characters who would risk their lives to follow the Professor’s intricate plans. One of them doesn’t always do as she’s told, though, as Tokyo is the show’s rebellious narrator who often goes her own way.
The polarizing character has received both criticism and love from fans, with some hating the way she jeopardizes the robberies and others iring her strong-willed actions. She has inspired numerous viewers to share memes that perfectly capture her decisions, personality, and relationships in the show.
Follow The Plan
There’s arguably no one else on the crew who has made as many mistakes as Tokyo did during the heists. She’s hard-headed, rash, and tends to believe her ideas are better than whoever’s in charge, and she’s not afraid to let that show.
This is why memes about her often highlight her seeming inability to stick to an effective plan. There are numerous moments that prove this, which include the way she stages a coup that endangers Berlin’s life and how she doesn’t stay out of The Mint and indirectly causes Moscow’s death.
The Wrong Choice
The high-pressure environment during the robberies can often cause the thieves to act hastily and make poor choices. None of them meet the level of foolishness Tokyo reaches, though, as when presented with a stressful situation, she almost always resorts to rash and dangerous actions.
A hilarious meme underscores the way Tokyo is often choosing her own dim-witted moves instead of sticking to the Professor’s well-designed plans. Whether it’s breaking the rules to form romantic attachments or usurping the assigned leader to take matters into her own hands, there are several bad scenarios that are a result of Tokyo’s recklessness.
Sabotaging The Mint
Tokyo is responsible for some of the worst things that happened in Money Heist and the show immediately makes it obvious that she’s not reliable. During the robbery of the Mint, Tokyo is clearly unhappy with Berlin’s leadership, and she doesn’t hesitate to let him know.
A gut-busting meme reflects Tokyo’s careless actions that almost cause the heist to fail. Aside from staging an unnecessary coup, Tokyo also causes Moscow’s death with her ridiculous stunt to get back into the building. Most fans would agree that she should have just stayed outside and waited it out.
A Maserati
A controversial moment in the show takes place when Denver compares Tokyo to a Maserati, which is an unfair objectification that no one should be subject to. The meme-worthy scene underscores Tokyo’s ability to attract other characters in the heist, as she forms questionable relationships with both Denver and Rio.
A witty meme reframes Denver’s comparison, pointing out that the only way Tokyo is a Maserati is because they’re both overrated and unreliable. Much of the annoyance from the fandom is directed towards Tokyo because of her indulgence in distractions during a life-or-death situation.
Secretly Pleased
The standoff between Berlin and Tokyo predictable ends terribly, with the original leader of the heist coming out on top. Berlin overreacts and gives Tokyo to the authorities in a dramatic fashion, strapping her to a table and rolling it outside of the Mint.
The devastating moment isn’t upsetting for all fans, however, as a meme highlights how the sequence is a cause for celebration for some who believe Tokyo is better off outside. This opinion only further emphasizes how tired viewers have grown of watching her make dim-witted mistakes because of her arrogance.
Going Her Own Way
One of the first things that happen during the crew’s training period is the Professor’s warning against any type of romantic relationship or attachment. This is also the first rule Tokyo breaks, as her perspective transforms after meeting Rio, a young and naive hacker who falls head over heels for her.
A funny meme captures this frustrating decision on Tokyo’s part, who’s supposed to be the more mature and seasoned criminal who understands the stakes of a heist. It’s ironic that she would risk experiencing the same thing that happened to her ex-boyfriend, which prompted her to swear never to mix love and robbery again.
The Better Couple
The divisive aspect of Tokyo’s character extends to her romance with Rio, as the couple has both fans and haters. It’s impossible not to compare their chaotic relationship with healthier or safer ones like Lisbon and the Professor’s or Berlin and Palermo’s.
A meme captures the resentment that has built up against Tokyo and Rio’s immature interactions. The image used captures one of the worst scenes between the two, as it soon leads to another risky decision that causes Rio’s imprisonment and torture. Tokyo again indirectly risks everyone’s lives because of her rash choices in that episode.
Her Turn To Be A Guardian Angel
No one can deny that Tokyo eventually redeemed herself with her ultimate sacrifice after some of the robbers are cornered by Gandia and his soldiers. One of Tokyo’s tear-jerking last lines on the show highlights a positive aspect of her personality, as she acknowledges how much the Professor has done for her and promises to repay his actions with her own heroic deed.
A heartbreaking image reflects most fans’ reactions to this moving moment, which soon gives way to a proper sendoff for the divisive character. Tokyo’s death is one of the most shocking yet necessary things to have happened in the gripping series.
Taking Gandia Down
The best thing Tokyo does in the show is to give up her life to ensure Rio and the other robbers can get away safely. Aside from staying behind to shoot at the encroaching soldiers, Tokyo comes up with a brilliant last-minute plan that ensures she goes out in a blaze of glory.
A humorous meme references the bittersweet scene where Tokyo smiles one last time before revealing the grenades. These end up killing her, but she takes down Gandia with her. Gandia is one of the most hated villains in the series, second only to Arturo.
Changing Hearts And Minds
Even her fans would likely it that Tokyo hasn’t made the best decisions in the show and has caused a lot of pain and heartache because of her impulsiveness. She acts like this for the majority of the show, up until her jarring sacrifice in the final season.
A relatable meme underscores the way she changed viewers’ minds because of her bravery and quick thinking in that one moment. She managed to save some of the thieves’ lives while weakening the enemy’s force, leveling the field for everyone, and giving her friends a shot at surviving until the end.
