Over the course of its first season, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters added over a dozen new events to the Monsterverse timeline. Even before the release of Apple TV+'s Monarch show, Godzilla and Kong's cinematic universe boasted a rich background. But thanks to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, its world offers an even deeper history.
10 Monarch Discovers The Ion Dragon in The Philippines
1952
As depicted in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 2, an early incarnation of Monarch had their first face-to-face Titan encounter in 1952. In the Philippines, Lee Shaw, Kieko Mieura, and Bill Randa found the wreckage of the USS Lawton, a nuclear submarine said to have been destroyed by a monster in Kong: Skull Island during World War II. After finding the USS Lawton, the three discovered that the perpetrator was a dragon-like monster the Monsterverse has since named the Ion Dragon. It would seem that this incident was what confirmed the existence of Titans to Monarch.
9 Monarch Confirms Castle Bravo Didn't Kill Godzilla
1956
2014's Godzilla movie revealed that the military tried to kill Godzilla in 1954 with the Castle Bravo "test," but what it didn't discuss was when the truth of their failure came out. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6 provided the answer: Godzilla was spotted by Monarch in 1955 off the coast of Hateruma Island after they used a new device invented by Monarch scientist Dr. Suzuki to lure him out. The United States military was informed of Godzilla's survival a year later.
8 Monarch Discovers The Existence Of An Insect Titan In Kazakhstan
1959
A few years after finding the Ion Dragon and Godzilla, Monarch found traces of an insect Titan in Kazakhstan in 1959. Giant bugs were found near a giant hole that turned out to be a Hollow Earth entrance. An attack by the bugs resulted in Keiko falling into the tunnel, where she was presumed dead for decades. The mysterious creature responsible for all this appeared in the flesh in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 8 when Monarch returned to the Hollow Earth entry point in 2015.
7 Bill Randa Developed An Early Version Of The Hollow Earth Theory
1956
When Monarch was on the verge of being shut down by the Department of Defense, Bill Randa and Keiko Randa went through their notes to come up with concrete evidence to prove Monarch's worth. To this end, Randa tried to figure out what they were missing about the Titans and came to the realization that Titans must be avoiding detection by traveling underground. This was essentially an early version of the Hollow Earth theory developed by Houston Brooks ahead of Kong: Skull Island.
6 The Military Launches A Failed Hollow Earth Expedition (& Shuts Down Monarch)
1962
After Monarch's ideas of an underground tunnel system were shared with the government, the military launched Operation Hourglass, which was a plan to send a team into a Hollow Earth entrance found in Kansas. Having realized that they can only through Hollow Earth rifts by getting Titans to through them first, they baited out the Ion Dragon, but the project was a massive failure. Every member of the team (but Lee Shaw) died. Because Monarch was unable to determine what went wrong, the Department of Defense cut off their funding.
5 A Monarch Operative Returned From The Hollow Earth's Axis Mundi World
1982
Unbeknownst to the military, Lee Shaw survived and found himself in an underground ecosystem that appears to acts as a bridge between the surface and Godzilla vs. Kong's Hollow Earth world. After being trapped in this place (which Keiko Randa has named Axis Mundi) for a week, Shaw escaped. But due to how differently time es there, it was 1982 when he finally made it back. Monarch swept the entire incident under the rug and placed him in a retirement home until his escape in 2015.
4 Monarch Discovers A New Ice Titan In Alaska
2015
A Kurt Russell's Lee Shaw and his rogue Monarch team within the same year.
3 After Beating The MUTOs, Godzilla Resurfaces In Algeria
2015
A scene in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6 shed light on what Godzilla was up to between the 2014 film and his fight with Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the Sahara Desert in 2015, Hiroshi Randa activated Dr. Suzuki's "Titan phone," causing Godzilla to emerge from the ground before walking away for parts unknown. From the looks of things, Godzilla had gone into hibernation in Algeria after his grueling battle with the MUTOs.
2 Monarch Forms A Partnership With APEX
2015
Based on a huge reveal from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 7, APEX and Monarch have had secret ties with each other since 2015. Nine years before the completion of their Mechagodzilla project, APEX tried to use one of their employees, May, as a spy against Monarch so that they could learn more about the Titans. To elicit help from May and her friends, Monarch deputy director Natalia Verdugo worked out a "deal" of some sort with APEX to get May out from under APEX's thumb. What APEX gained from this arrangement is likely what led to them having a base on Skull Island, which was established at an unspecified time.
1 Godzilla Defeats The Ion Dragon
2017
After entering the Axis Mundi world in 2015, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters characters hurried to escape before too much time would on the surface. To get out, they activated Dr. Suzuki's device, unintentionally calling the attention of two Titans rather than one. The Ion Dragon nearly halted their escape from Axis Mundi, but Godzilla arrived as well, setting up a brief showdown between the two. Godzilla earned an easy victory and tossed the beaten Titan into a portal of some kind. When the humans crossed over to the other side, they discovered that it was already 2017.
