What The MobLand Trailer Means For The Show

Enter The Underworld Of Guy Ritchie

Created by Ronan Bennett, who also wrote the entire series, MobLand originally began life as The Donovans, a prequel to the Showtime series Ray Donovan providing an origin story for the Donovan family. However, during development, the project was reworked into its own standalone story, changing the warring crime families to the Harrigans and the Stevensons in London. Guy Ritchie later signed on to direct, who is known for his many British gangster films such as Snatch and The Gentlemen.

Between his unique brand of gangster movies like Snatch and Hollywood reboots like Aladdin, director Guy Ritchie has a constant high-quality output.

MobLand, a show about two warring London crime families, is right up Guy Ritchie's alley considering his signature style of British gangster films, which often feature fast-paced storytelling and sharp dialogue, both of which seem to be present in the trailer. MobLand's mix of brutal violence and complex criminal dynamics seem to align perfectly with Ritchie's strengths. With his direction, MobLand has the potential to be a stylish and darkly entertaining crime saga.

Our Take On The MobLand Trailer

It's Certainly Star-Studded, But The Story Seems Safe

Tom Hardy in MobLand

MobLand certainly boasts a star-studded cast, similar to other Paramount+ series such as Taylor Sheridan's Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman, and the Yellowstone spinoff 1923, which also stars Helen Mirren. However, the story seems to be lacking. Perhaps it's too typical of Guy Ritchie's style, and isn't interested in bringing anything new to the table. While fans of the lead stars and British gangster dramas may still find it entertaining, MobLand seems to play it safe rather than breaking new ground in the genre.

MobLand premieres on Paramount+ on March 30.
