Warning: Contains spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Episode #6.One of the major hooks for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has been its status as an alternate take on the Universal Century timeline. The series has an interesting point of divergence with Char stealing the Gundam and winning the war for Zeon, and it’s been fun to see all the resulting changes in the background while the main plot with Machu and her friends continues to unfold.
So far, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s alternate timeline has been rather simple, but that all changed with episode #6. Episode #6 marks a dramatic shift for the anime as Machu, Shuji, and Nyaan’s friendship begins to crumble and Zeon prepares for an assassination attempt against Kycilia Zabi, and to further sell the dramatic nature of it all, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX episode #6 casually introduced some of the biggest villains of the Universal Century timeline. It completely changes what people probably thought the show would be like, and overall, it makes the show all the more exciting.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Officially Brings In Zeta's Biggest Villains
Mobile Suit Gundam's Titans Explained
In Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the Earth Federation created the military organization Titans to clean up any remnants of Zeon following the One Year War, but they quickly devolved into a xenophobic group that abused their power to oppress Spacenoids and planned to usurp the Earth Federation, as well. Bask Om and the Cyber Newtypes, artificially-created Newtypes, were major players in the Titans, and with their appearance in episode #6, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is officially introducing new versions of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam’s biggest villains.
GQuuuuuuX’s version of the Titans appears to still be aligned with the Earth Federation, although they’re no less antagonistic, but it’s still a major reveal. Having them involved at all is one thing, but considering how much the series had focused only on the original Gundam anime up until now, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX bringing in the Titans shows that it wants to use all elements of the Universal Century timeline, not just what was present in the original anime. That makes the worldbuilding far richer by comparison, and hopefully, it leads to even greater things down the line.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Has No Excuse To Not Bring In Its Other Heroes
Which Other Gundam Characters Need To Show Up?
Up until now, the relative lack of characters from the Universal Century timeline could be excused by the show mainly using the alternate timeline as a backdrop for its plot, and it’s been very effective from day one. With the appearance of the Titans, though, that means that GQuuuuuuX is far more willing to bring in older and vital Universal Century characters than it initially seemed, so there’s no longer any excuse for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX to bring in some of the biggest heroes of the Universal Century timeline.
As for which other characters could appear, the introduction of the Titans would make it easy to bring in Kamille Bidan and Bright Noa, as they were two of their biggest opponents in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and with how much GQuuuuuuX has revolved around Char’s legacy, it still makes plenty of sense to bring in the original protagonist, Amuro Ray. Granted, none of those characters would be like how they were in the original shows, but the idea of older Gundam characters appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has never been stronger, and that’s great to think about.
Does GQuuuuuuX's Latest Plot Twist Make It Hard For Newcomers To Enjoy?
Why The New Plot Twist Might Be Bad For New Gundam Fans
A big part of why the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime works as well as it does is that, despite being involved with the Universal Century timeline, it’s framed in a way that makes things accessible to newcomers who haven’t had the time to watch decades of content that have gone into the series. With the Titans showing up, however, fans are now expected to know characters and concepts that go even beyond the original Gundam anime, so Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s latest twist runs the risk of making the show too alienating for newer fans.
Of course, it’s still too soon to tell whether something like that will actually happen. GQuuuuuuX has always done a good job of easing fans into some of the bigger facets of the Universal Century timeline, so as confusing as the new twist might be, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s writing up until now should mean that new fans will have an easy time understanding the Titans. A twist like this is far too exciting to be used improperly, so hopefully, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will know exactly how to handle it properly.
