A Minecraft Movie gets a full-length trailer, providing the best look yet at the adaptation. Directed by Jared Hess, the film serves as an adaptation of the popular Minecraft video game franchise, following a young girl and her band of unlikely companions as they set out on an adventure to save the Overworld from an Ender Dragon. The first Minecraft Movie teaser landed in September, providing the first look at Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garett Garrison, and it was met with a mixed response.

Warner Bros. Pictures now shares the official trailer for A Minecraft Movie, unveiling more about the film. The footage features a first look at young Steve and his troubled upbringing before jumping ahead in time to Steve as an adult.

Momoa also appears in the trailer, as do cast Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks. The footage provides a closer look at the Overworld, revealing how the movie recreates the video game's environment, but it also teases that there will be plenty of references to the games in other ways, including in the form of props and creatures. Despite the impressive A Minecraft Movie cast, the teaser trailer didn't go over well, and the video's YouTube comments are overwhelmingly negative. "Funny prank warner bros, you can release the real teaser now," a comment with 93,000 likes from @Ink_44 reads. The latest trailer seemingly addresses the backlash to the teaser, opening with a clapperboard and a voice saying, "Minecraft trailer, take two." The tone of the trailer is certainly a change in direction, aiming to highlight the emotional stakes of the film in its footage of a young Steve.

In addition to attempting a bit of a course-correction, the latest trailer for A Minecraft Movie packs in plenty of game references. Piglins are shown to serve as antagonists in the movie, for example, just as they do in some of the games. Momoa's Garrett is also shown digging in one brief scene, and the earth blocks pop out of existence in true game fashion. The end of the trailer also features an Ender Pearl, a device from the games that allows the to teleport to wherever it lands.

Will The Video Game IP Be Enough To Draw In Audiences?

Packing a film full of references and Easter eggs is generally not a great way to garner critical acclaim, but it could end up working with general audiences. The Super Mario Bros. Movie reviews were mixed from critics, for example, with that video game adaptation offering little of substance beyond familiar items and characters from the source material, but audiences responded very positively. In addition to scoring 95% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, that film was a major box office success.

A Minecraft Movie has a reported budget of $150 million compared to The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $100 million.

A Minecraft Movie is unlikely to top $1 billion at the box office like The Super Mario Bros. Movie did, but it will likely still end up being successful. Even with the response to trailers being somewhat mixed, Minecraft is a hugely popular video game franchise, which could be enough. A Minecraft Movie's latest trailer is certainly an improvement over the initial teaser, but it probably hasn't quite won over skeptics just yet.
