Early reviews for Mike Flanagan's Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House became a runaway hit in 2018 and the director followed that up with The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second in his Haunting of... anthology series in Netflix.
Although the status of his Netflix anthology show is up in the air, Flanagan is back with another horror show titled Midnight Mass. The series is set in the isolated island community of Crockett Island, the citizens of which find themselves up in arms about the return of a disgraced young man, played by Zach Gilford, and the arrival of preacher played by Hamish Linklater. The arrival of Linklater's Father Paul incites a renewed religious fervor that is only spurred further by seemingly miraculous events. Midnight Mass is slated to hit Netflix September 24, but a lucky few have already seen some of the episodes.
Critics and viewers who got to check out Midnight Mass early have nothing but praise for Flanagan's latest. Prolific author Stephen King even tweeted out his own glowing review of the series. Others praised Flanagan for his tense and richly thematic series that comes to a head in truly terrifying ways. Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood is another prolific figure who tweeted his approval of the show, but everyone seems to agree: Midnight Mass is not one to miss. Check out their thoughts below:
The resounding praise for Midnight Mass should come as no surprise - both The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor proved that Flanagan may be even better doing long-form, episodic horror than he is doing feature length horror. Additionally, early trailers for Midnight Mass teased just how creepy it was going to be and it seems like they were spot on in communicating the atmospheric and disturbing religious horror going on in the show.
Midnight Mass is arriving at the perfect time - not only is the Halloween season kicking into high gear with some truly insane horror (like James Wan's recently released Malignant), but there will be even more to parse through with this seven-episode series. All episodes of Midnight Mass are slated to hit Netflix on September 24, just in time for October.
