Michael Fassbender has essentially disappeared from movie screens since 2017, so what has the Irish star been doing in the years since? After appearing on TV shows such as Band Of Brothers and Hex, Fassbender made his film debut with 2007's 300. Despite being a ing role and starring opposite a scenery-chewing Gerard Butler, Fassbender nevertheless made an impression. He later received acclaim for his work in Irish drama Hunger, but it was his performance in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds that put him on audiences' radar.
In the years that followed, he ed the X-Men saga playing a young Magneto, fronted two Alien movie prequels and shined in smaller films like Shame. However, Fassbender went on to front a series of critical and commercial disappointments in 2016 and 2017, including video game adaptation Assassin's Creed and maligned thriller The Snowman. Since then, his last credit was playing Magneto for the final time in 2019's Dark Phoenix - which was largely filmed in 2017. Despite his lack of movie output, Fassbender fans don't have to worry. The actor has several film projects in the works, and he took a break from the big screen to pursue his other major ion: auto racing.
Fassbender Has Focused On Racing Since 2017
Fassbender has always had a ion for racing and grew as a big fan of Formula 1. In 2017, he finished 15th while racing in the Ferrari Challenge's Coppa Shell class on the Mugello Circuit. In 2018, Fassbender (who is still a Bond contender) went on to race his first full Ferrari Challenge season - coming in first during the season's opening race - before then taking part in the Porsche Racing Experience in 2019. All of this was building to his dream of taking part in a 24-hour race at Le Mans, which finally came to in 2022.
Fassbender's experiences as a racer have also been covered in documentary series by Porsche on YouTube. While the actor has no interest in becoming a professional racer, he's also spoken of wanting to realize his full potential too. That's why he's largely prioritized racing over acting in recent years. He and his teammates Matt Campbell and Zacharie Robichon finished in 51st position out of 62 teams at Le Mans.
Fassbender Has 3 Films, Including David Fincher's Killer
Racing hasn't completely dominated Fassbender's life, as he also has three movies. The first is Kung Fury 2, a feature-length follow-up to the 2015 viral short that played as a loving parody of '80s action films. In addition to Fassbender - who is playing Colt Magnum - Arnold Schwarzenegger will also play the President. Despite wrapping in 2019, lawsuits and post-production issues have held up the sequel's release.
Fassbender has two projects being released in 2023. The first is Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins, a real-life sporting drama that cast Fassbender as a coach trying to turn the American Samoa team - responsible for the worst loss in international football history - into a winning squad. Michael Fassbender's final project is directed by David Fincher. Based on a French graphic novel series, The Killer sees the actor play the titular hitman with Tilda Swinton co-starring. The movie's release date hasn't been set but it will likely arrive sometime in late 2023.
