There are a lot of tough bosses in Metaphor: ReFantazio, but Grotesque Guptauros is one you will face fairly early on in the game. You will find Grotesque Guptauros in Grand Trad, which is the main city of Euchronia. There is a side quest called A Bullish Embargo tied to another dungeon, which you can get from Brigitta, the Igniter Shop owner. This dungeon will eventually lead you to Grotesque Guptauros, which is not an easy fight if you are not prepared.
Some bosses in Metaphor: ReFantazio will be easier than others, but that all depends on your party and how you have chosen to structure it. You will have to choose between different archetypes and the various levels you have given each of them. There is a lot of freedom in a game like this, but that can make it difficult if you go in without a plan.
How To Prepare For The Grotesque Guptauros Boss Fight
Archetypes & Moves To Use
There are several things you can do to prepare to face this boss before you get to it in Metaphor: ReFantazio. One of the things you will likely want to do is have the Brawler Archetype unlocked so that you will be able to use the Synthesis move Hammer of Justice. If you do not and are unsure where to get it, you can substitute this with the Warrior Archetype and use the Jump Thrust move instead.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Preview: Combining The Best Of SMT & Persona Into The Next Big JRPG
After one hour hands-on with the opening parts of Metaphor: ReFantazio, its Atlus DNA is undeniable - but it could be an evolution for JRPGs.
You are looking to have either two Knight Archetypes and a Brawler, or two Knights and a Warrior. This will make the fight a little easier and keep you from enraging Grotesque Guptauros. On the Warrior or Brawler, you will want to have the inherited trait Medi, as this will be one of the only ways to keep your party in tip-top shape. On the two Knights, consider the inherited trait Heat Up, which will increase your physical attack skill.
This guide is based on Normal Mode. Other Difficulty Modes may have different results.
You will want to set up the two Knights in different ways. Build one up as a damage-dealer and one as a . The damage dealer will need as much strength as possible in your equipment, while the Knight will want as much Agility as possible. This allows the Knight to go first and set up the bonuses and buffs, which the attacker can then take advantage of and hit the boss for more.
You want the Brawler/Warrior to use Medi as opposed to a Mage/Healer because if you use one of the latter, the boss will go into a rage and make the fight much, much harder, if not impossible.
Additionally, give the Brawler or Warrior as much magic as you can, as you want to be able to use Medi as often and as effectively as possible to keep the party alive. This is to offset the fact that you cannot have a healer on the team. Also keep in mind that even in this early stage in the game, you can choose different Archetypes and have similar results, but this is the path we suggest.
Best Party To Fight Grotesque Guptauros
Picking Your Characters
This early in the game, you do not have as many choices in of playable characters in Metaphor: ReFantazio. In this setup that was suggested by YouTuber Naz talgic, you will want to be using the main character as the Brawler/Warrior while Strohl and Hulkenberg become the Knights. Strohl will be a little better as the damage dealer, leaving Hulkenberg to be the Knight.

How To Beat Grotesque Guptauros (Best Strategy)
Suggested Moves To Win
The reason to make sure the Knight – in this case, Hulkenberg – has a lot of agility so that she can go first is that you will want to open by using a buff for Piercing Damage. Have Hulkenberg use Synthesis to perform Jump Thrust, which will both deal Piercing Damage and lower Grotesque Guptauros’ defense for three turns. This is going to help you win faster and is something to do as often as possible.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Improves On Persona 5 With This One Element
Metaphor: ReFantazio, Atlus’ brand-new JRPG, has one key advantage over Persona 5 and the whole Persona series that makes it the JRPG of the year.
You will want to keep the party healed as much as possible, as he has several heavy-hitting attacks that can wipe you out if you are not careful. This is particularly true if he uses his Charge move. You should always use Guard after seeing him use that move, as he will nearly always use Frenzy right after that which could wipe the whole team.
If you are using the main character as the Brawler/Warrior, you will be mainly using them to heal through things such as Medi. Your Knight can also use healing items when needed. If you do have Brawler on the main character, the damage dealer can use Hammer of Justice to further weaken Grotesque Guptauros and deal heavy Piercing Damage. Otherwise, keep using Jump Thrust when you can.
If you have Blizz or any other Ice-based attacks, you can also use those against this boss as that is another weakness, otherwise, keep doing more of the same. Keep using Jump Thrust, Hammer of Justice, Guard, and heal as much as possible. This keeps the boss weak and allows you to withstand heavy attacks.
Once you have defeated Grotesque Guptauros in Metaphor: ReFantazio, you will have earned the Falchion weapon as well as a Brute’s Horn, which will allow you to finish the side quest and move on to the next adventure.
