After helping to shape the MCU as one of the original Avengers, Chris Hemsworth has hinted at ending his journey as Thor. Hemsworth has transformed Thor over the years, recently becoming a more comedic hero. However, the God of Thunder has also been known to show a villainous nature at times.
Several MCU quotes highlight Thor's darker side which can be hard to ignore. From his earlier days as an arrogant warrior to the times when his anger gets the best of him, these quotes might cause fans to consider if Thor was actually a villain the whole time.
"When I Am King, I’ll Hunt The Monsters Down And Slay Them All."
Young Thor - Thor (2011)
There have been events that have changed Thor considerably, but it seems like aggression and violence have always been a part of him. In Thor, there is a brief scene showing Thor and Loki as children discussing the war against the Frost Giants with their father Odin.
Even as a child, Thor gleefully describes how he would wipe out the Frost Giants without mercy when he became king. It is a bit odd that Odin didn't see a red flag in this young behavior and Thor's bloodthirsty ways didn't seem to get any better by the time he was ready to take the throne.
"We Don't Do That Anymore."
Thor: Love And Thunder (2022)
There are certainly times fans could point to when Thor has been heroic, but sometimes he cannot even manage to hide his dark side in those moments. One such instance comes in Thor: Love and Thunder as Thor gives a heroic speech about going out to rescue the Asgardian kids.
But when he promises they will feast afterward, he has to clarify that they won't feast on the children and hints that was an Asgardian custom at one time. It is an ittedly funny joke but puts the idea in the heads of fans that Thor may have eaten children at some point.
"I Have More Than Enough Words To Describe You Stark."
Thor- Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
The Avengers didn't start off on great initially, especially Thor as he got into fights with nearly everyone. But while their bond as a team grew over time, it became clear that Thor was not above hurting his teammates if he deemed it appropriate.
Certainly, Tony's unleashing Ultron on the world was a terrible idea and Thor has the right to be angry. But it is quite shocking when he charges into a room, lifts Tony in the air, and makes this threat. If not for the other heroes to calm him, it's unclear how far Thor would have taken Tony's punishment.
"You Want Me To Put The Hammer Down?"
Thor - The Avengers (2012)
Iron Man might be the first member of the Avengers that Thor battles, but he doesn't stop there. Unsurprisingly, their ego-driven fight is broken up by Captain America who attempts to be the voice of reason to these two immature warriors.
But when Cap suggests that Thor put his hammer down and be peaceful, Thor loses his cool and attacks Cap. It is quite telling that a very rational suggestion would set Thor off like that, showing the kind of unchecked anger he has boiling underneath.
"And You're An Old Man And A Fool."
Thor - Thor (2011)
Thor's father Odin is another MCU character that fans shouldn't idolize given the revelations about how he conquered the Nine Realms. That makes it all the more worrisome when he ends up being the calmer and more collected one in a conversation with Thor.
After attacking Jotunheim and igniting a war, Thor lashes out at his father as a weak king. The insult is misplaced as Odin is the one trying to save Asgard from a potentially devastating war. More than that, it shows Thor could be so cruel to his own father simply because he wants glory in battle.
"Very Well You Do Not Have My Word."
Thor - Thor: The Dark World (2013)
In Thor changed a lot from Phase 1. He is a more mature and reasonable hero, but his anger and violence doesn't always stay hidden. When there is a jailbreak on Asgard, Thor initially keeps his cool and promises any prisoner who returns to their cell will have his word that they will not be harmed.
All it takes is one punch from a prisoner for that wise and merciful side of him to disappear. It is as if it gives him permission to be his true self and just beat up the prisoners as he sees fit.
"Father, We'll Finish Them Together!"
Thor - Thor (2011)
Plenty of MCU heroes have made poor decisions with the intention of helping others or protecting the world. While Thor being so eager to go to war against his enemies could potentially be seen as this kind of misguided heroics, it is impossible to ignore the joy he gets from it.
As he attacks Jotunheim for nothing more than to satisfy his wounded ego, Odin arrives and Thor excitedly suggests they "finish" the entire army. Seeing the grin on his face at the idea of a father-son slaughter is quite a disturbing moment for the God of Thunder.
"Break Their Spirits."
Thor - Thor (2011)
Thor's philosophy as a hero at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder is "protect the nice ones." It would be a lot more understandable if his thrill from battle came from protecting others, but that certainly has not always been the case.
After a few Frost Giants sneak into Asgard, Thor suggests an attack on them. But instead of fighting off an aggressive enemy, Thor simply wants to break their spirits so that they would not ever think about attacking Asgard. It is a shockingly cruel tactic.
"I Went For The Head."
Thor - Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Though he was one of the characters who contributed to Thanos' eventual downfall, Thor also played a big role in allowing the Mad Titan to win in the first place. However, Thor doesn't make the same mistake the next time he meets Thanos, executing him in cold blood.
While not too many fans feel sympathy for Thanos, it is a disturbing reaction from an Avenger to simply chop off the head of an enemy. It is not as if killing Thanos was even necessary at that point so Thor did it out of his own rage.
"The Gates Of Hel Are Filled With The Screams Of His Victims."
Thor - Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
The Avengers might gather in battle together, but it is clear that Thor views these battles differently than his teammates. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Natasha attempts to make Bruce feel better by asking Thor to report on how Hulk fared in battle.
Thor proudly describes all the people Hulk killed which just makes Bruce feel worse. It is a telling comparison that Bruce would be sickened by such a thing whereas Thor sees it as something to be celebrated.
