Revolutions, thus leaving a rather intriguing question: How exactly is Reeves back, if his character Neo died in Revolutions?

Indeed, much of The Matrix 4 remains a mystery. No plot details have been revealed at this time, though Reeves hinted The Matrix 4 is actually a love story. A slew of new cast have been added to the project, like Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, and Abdul-Mateen. However, none of their characters have been revealed just yet, though fans certainly have their theories about who each could be. Abdul-Mateen recently shared some new insight about the project, though he's remaining tight-lipped about who he'll be playing.

Fresh off winning an Emmy for his role in HBO's Watchmen, Abdul-Mateen sat down with Collider to talk about The Matrix 4. Unsurprisingly, he didn't reveal anything about the story or his character, but he was able to share his reaction to Wachowski's script. In doing so, Abdul-Mateen hinted that while The Matrix 4 is different, it shares some elements with the original films. Abdul-Mateen explained:

My reaction to the script [was], ‘Wow, people are really gonna like this. I like this. People are really gonna like this.’ It’s different and it’s the same, you know, at the same time. It’s a really, really very intelligent blend of what we want and what we may not know that we want.

Abdul-Mateen's comments will likely be met with some relief from fans. When it comes to reviving a beloved franchise, filmmakers are faced with a tricky problem. Fans want to see something new, but they also don't want it to stray too far from what came before. For The Matrix 4, Wachowski will need to craft a compelling, original story, but she'll also need to feature those callbacks and connections fans are expecting. Luckily, it sounds like she's heading in the right direction.

Already, The Matrix 4 promises to feature strong connections to the past through Reeves, Moss, and other returning players. However, it'll also be quite different because of those who aren't returning. Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original trilogy, evidently wasn't asked back for this installment, and scheduling conflicts got in the way of Hugo Weaving reprising his role as Agent Smith. Hopefully, the new characters within The Matrix 4 will make up for their absences and help make this new film something truly special.
