New Live-Action Masters Of The Universe Movie Is Flipping A Huge Part Of Dolph Lundgren's 1987 Disaster
The new live-action Masters of the Universe movie is flipping the biggest problem with the 1987 version – but it might still suffer for it.
10 Moss Man
One Of Eternia's Most Powerful Beings
Kreann'ot n'Horosh, also known as Moss Man, is an original member of He-Man's Heroic Warriors. With the ability to speak with and control any and all vegetation and camouflage himself perfectly, Moss Man makes the perfect spy for He-Man's team. While the character was a bit of a nobody in the original Masters of the Universe cartoon, his power level was upgraded in the 2002 animated reboot. Since then, Moss Man has been known as one of the most powerful beings in Eternia, seen as a legendary spirit who looked after the natural world as its guardian.
In Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Moss Man was unceremoniously destroyed in the show's opening scene, making an appearance in the new live-action movie even more intriguing. Alan Oppenheimer voiced him in the Netflix series, the same actor who played Skeletor in the original '80s cartoon. In a bit of irony, Moss Man was killed off by Skeletor (Mark Hamill), in a moment that felt like the ing of the voice-acting torch. Due to Moss Man's design, he would most likely have to appear as a motion-captured CG character in the movie, which means anyone could voice him, including the 94-year-old Oppenheimer.
Moss Man was part of the fourth wave of Masters of the Universe toys, came with a flocked "moss" body, and had a pine scent.
9 Fisto
A Master Of "Hand-To-Hand" Combat
Fisto is one of the more interesting of He-Man's Heroic Warriors, mainly due to his lack of backstory. It's known that he was once a server of Skeletor, but changed his ways after meeting and becoming friends with He-Man. Some storylines in the 2002 animated series explored the fact that he is Man-At-Arms' brother and vague possibilities that he was Teela's real father. Other than a few episodes in that run, Fisto's character was severely underdeveloped.
Even the continuity of his powers has changed between appearances. In the original series, his giant, metal fist was somewhat of a projectile prosthetic, and in the 2002 series, he just had a single massive fist and wore a gauntlet. Bringing Fisto to the live-action movie would allow his character's past to be explored more thoroughly, including the origin of his metal fist, regardless of which power variant is used. Making him a more comedic character in the film would also allow him to use the hilarious fist puns he's known for in Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
8 Mer-Man
The King Of The Seas
Although Mer-Man was an early minion of Skeletor's, and seen as his #3 behind Beast Man, the character has grown substantially over the decades. Mer-Man still provides some servitude to Skeletor, but mostly of his own volition, and he's essentially been dubbed "King of the Seas," much like Marvel's Namor or DC Comics' Aquaman. He has the power to communicate with and control all creatures of the oceans and has proven to be a formidable opponent for He-Man and the Heroic Warriors over time.
Mer-Man's place in a live-action movie could put him in a power struggle with Skeletor over who should rule Eternia, eventually having him succumb to the Evil Lord of Destruction. His design and abilities are perfect for action-packed battle scenes that involve sharks, giant squids, monster crabs, and tons of other creature baddies that could show up in a live-action fight. A new movie would be a great chance to develop Mer-Man into a main villain, even leading up to him being the antagonist in a sequel.
7 Clawful
The Crushing Crustacean
Clawful is one of the coolest-looking villains in the Masters of the Universe franchise. As one of Skeletor's strongest henchmen, the human-crab hybrid has become a regular foe of He-Man's Heroic Warriors. Clawful often plays the "Starscream" role to Skeletor, wanting to take over the Evil Warriors but being a little too unintelligent to do so. His best moments come from being the brutish crab monster who can crush skulls with his powerful claws.
Clawful has fought one-on-one against Fisto several times in the franchise, and the two have somewhat of a rivalry. They could have a fun back-and-forth in the live-action movie, and seeing Fisto defeat Clawful by wedging a heavy log between his claws (like he does in the cartoon) would capture a Guardians of the Galaxy level of humor needed for the movie. Clawful isn't really the type of character that would get much backstory, but introducing him as a ing villain would be a treat for He-Man fans.
6 Trap Jaw
The Interdimensional Cyborg
Trap Jaw is another of Skeletor's more powerful allies. He's a sharp-toothed cyborg who can travel between dimensions and switch his right arm out with a variety of deadly weapons, including laser guns, freeze rays, grappling hooks, and rocket launchers. Originally, Trap Jaw came to Eternia in hopes of taking over the universe for himself, and it took He-Man and Skeletor ing forces to stop his takeover. This type of storyline could work well in a live-action film, in an almost Godzilla vs. Kong type of direction.
According to the toyline's creator, Roger Sweet, Trap Jaw's design was based on the 007 villain, Jaws.
The live-action film could use Trap Jaw as a typical henchman for Skeletor. However, beefing up the character's interdimensional backstory or using his 2002 Masters of the Universe storyline where he was a Man-at-Arms for Eternos could offer more depth for the character and the movie as a whole. He's routinely taken the reins as leader of Snake Mountain in the circumstances in which Skeletor has been occupied or defeated, so even starting the movie with Trap Jaw in charge could be an interesting introduction.
5 Faker
More Than Just Bizarro He-Man
Historically seen as one of He-Man's lamest villains, Faker is far more than just a blue version of He-Man created to sell more action figures. Now, he's revered as one of Master of the Universe's most underrated villains. Faker is an evil, robotic version of He-Man that was built by Skeletor to infiltrate Castle Grayskull at any waking moment.
Throughout the comics and cartoons, Faker has been used by Skeletor to imitate both Prince Adam and He-Man, trick his allies and friends, and even betray the king of Eternia. Introducing Faker in a live-action film could present the infiltration story in order to cause conflict between the heroes. The special effects, especially when Faker's external He-Man disguise starts to disintegrate, could be epic and look amazing on screen. A dual role from Nicholas Galitzine could also show off an exceptional range from the actor.
4 Scare Glow
Eternia's Most Terrifying Villain
Scare Glow is, by far, the most chilling villain in the Masters of the Universe franchise. He's a ghost from another universe who was conjured to Eternia by Skeletor and forced to do his evil bidding. Since arriving, Scare Glow has become the ruler of Subternia, Eternia's land of the dead. His fear-inducing powers have caused a lot of problems for the Heroic Warriors throughout the decades.
Because of an excerpt on one of the more recent action figure packages that reads, "evil ghost of Skeletor," one of the more popular fan theories out there is that Scare Glow is actually Skeletor's ghost from a futuristic universe. This would be an excellent storyline to follow in a live-action film. Having Skeletor summon and take control of his own ghost would be a perfect stepping stone in presenting just how evil he can be. Because the character would most likely need to be CG in the film, using Tony Todd's haunting voice from Revelations would be extremely fitting.
3 Hordak
The Leader Of The Evil Horde
Hordak is possibly the only character who is more intimidating to the planet of Eternia than Skeletor. Hellbent on taking vengeance upon his former student in evil, Hordak has traveled through different dimensions to use his army of demons to attack Skeletor, He-Man, and anyone else who may get in his way of conquering Eternia. He's the ruler of Etheria, a planet connected to Eternia, where he serves as the main antagonist to He-Man's twin sister, She-Ra. Unlike Skeletor, Hordak relies on technological weapons instead of magic.
Using Hordak as the main or secondary antagonist in a live-action Masters of the Universe film could raise the stakes by offering an even more evil villain than Skeletor. It could also be used as a gateway at the end of the film to introduce She-Ra, who is one of the most popular characters in the franchise. Hordak has been a villainous fixture in almost every single TV series, including the She-Ra shows, so his presence is a must in the live-action He-Man world.
2 She-Ra
The Princess Of Power
Being He-Man's twin sister, no one would make a better partner in a live-action film than She-Ra. While her character was originally made to attract the attention of girls to the He-Man cartoon and toyline, she has become an important part of the franchise and has been a fan favorite since the beginning. Her 2018 animated series has had more seasons than any He-Man show, and she appeared alongside He-Man in He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword in 1985, which was followed up with a two-season animated series.
She-Ra's brains play a perfect compliment to He-Man's brawn, and her strategic prowess would be perfect for helping the duo escape any of Skeletor or Hordak's shenanigans. She-Ra's inclusion in the live-action film would help do what she was originally created for: introducing a young generation of girls to a fantasy action franchise that doesn't typically stand out to them. Seeing someone like Kathryn Newton or Anya Taylor-Joy in the role would bring star power to the film and an action movie experience to the character.
She-Ra was originally going to be in the 1987 Masters of the Universe film, but the idea was dropped before production.
1 Battle Cat (Cringer)
He-Man's Faithful Feline
A character sorely missed from the 1987 live-action film is He-Man's faithful feline companion, Cringer, also known as the ferocious Battle Cat when powered by the Power Sword. The effects in the late '80s may have come out with Cringer looking like a giant stuffed animal, but modern special effects, especially creating massive, fearsome cats, have come a long way. Films like The Lion King (2019) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have proven these types of creatures can be made to look realistic, in and out of battle.
At this point, Battle Cat is a staple of the Masters of the Universe franchise, and his inclusion is just as important (if not more) than the Power Sword or any ing characters. The film could even go the route of the original cartoon and give Cringer a goofy voice while in his scaredy-cat form. However, not seeing Battle Cat go toe-to-toe with Skeletor's Panthor in a live-action movie would be an extreme disservice to fans of the franchise.
