Bioware is assuring old-school Mass Effect players that they will still be able to use the original controls for the Mako tank in 2007’s hit sci-fi RPG, the Mako was notoriously difficult to handle, guaranteeing Commander Sheppard and company a bumpy ride whenever they stepped behind the wheel.

The Mako received such a mixed reception in the first Mass Effect game that the tank was removed from the later two Mass Effect installments in the trilogy - though it did make its triumphant return with much smoother controls in 2017’s Mass Effect Andromeda. Bioware has since promised that this commitment to a much easier ride in the Mako would carry over into the remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but it hasn’t forgotten about the masochists who would rather shake, rattle, and roll along the rugged terrains of the Milky Way galaxy.

In a sitdown with improved Mako controls of the new version and the rough-handling original setup. “For those people out there who do like pain, we've left the option to leave it back kind of closer to the original controls as well if you want,” Meek humorously noted when the subject of the Mako came up. “You'll never get consensus […] whether some people love it, or some people hate it,” Walters added in regards to the Mako’s infamously divisive reception. “We're making a big point of it often in marketing, but it's a lighter touch than I think some people might think. While largely staying true to the story and gameplay that fans loved so much, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be making several improvements to the original games. Aside from the expected graphical overhaul that comes with the jump between console generations, the new edition will add many more options for players to customize their Commander Shepard, as well as improved Morality choices and a new Photo Mode to show off the shiny new coat of paint.

The Mako remains as divisive as it is iconic to the world of Mass Effect, and in keeping with the Mass Effect's overarching theme of choice, Bioware will give players the option to either test out the trusty rover’s newly revamped controls or bump along with the older settings. Either way, fans will be able to step behind the wheel of the Mako when Mass Effect Legendary Edition launches next Friday.
