Summary
- Marvel Rivals is a hero shooter releasing later this year, pitting characters from across the comic franchise against each other in 6v6 matches.
- Marvel Rivals will launch with 25 playable characters, split into three different gameplay roles – Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist.
- The game will be free-to-play, but will likely include a variety of microtransactions.
Marvel Rivals closed beta showed the immense promise of a PvP-only game for one of the world's most beloved comic franchises.
Matches in Marvel Rivals work in a 6v6 format over various game modes. These game modes will feel familiar to fans of hero shooters, varying from payload escorts to fighting over control points. Characters are split up into three classes: Vanguard (Tank), Duelist (DPS), and Strategist (). As of now, there is no limit to how many of each class can be in a team, but having a proper balance and synergy will lead to the most success.
Marvel Rivals Release Date
December 6, 2024
Marvel Rivals will be released on December 6, 2024, which is amazing news for a game that was originally predicted to not be released until 2025. However, this may not be the next time players get to experience the new title. Rumors have circulated about an open beta sometime before launch, and with this release date, that would likely be in the coming months if one is planned. This would be a smart move since there was some frustration around the closed betas' low chance of gaining access.
Every Platform Marvel Rivals Will Be On
Current-Gen Consoles & PC
Marvel Rivals will be playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X/S, with the PC option including both Steam and the Epic Games Store as possible marketplaces. The comic hero shooter will crossplay on release, but this feature will be turned off for the competitive mode. This is almost surely because of the difference in input devices – mouse and keyboard for PC s, and controllers for those on consoles. As of now, there has been no indication if cross-platform progression will be a feature.
The inclusion of crossplay alone is a huge advantage Marvel Rivals will have, and even more so that it is coming at launch. Delaying it would have been a minor inconvenience, but not having it at all would have been a hit that a new game trying to build a large audience cannot afford to take. Cross-platform progression should be a quality-of-life priority for those who do switch platforms, both to save time unlocking heroes again and to keep cosmetics that they may have to pay for.
Marvel Rivals' Price & How To Unlock New Heroes
Free-To-Play With No Paywalled Characters
Marvel Rivals will be completely free-to-play for anyone who wants access to it. It was also announced at Gamescom that every hero on release and in the future can be unlocked for free by playing the game. As of now, there is no official news on microtransactions in Marvel Rivals. However, based on the genre and free-to-play status, there is a likely chance of paid battle es and cosmetics to help fund the game.
This will be a crucial part of the success of the game along with the content. Overpriced and predatory microtransactions are a feature that has been the death of many games or, at best, major controversy. It is helpful that the heroes are not part of this, but if skins become too pricey or pay-to-win features are in the battle , that could quickly kill excitement for the title.
Every Character Confirmed For Marvel Rivals Release
A Roster Filled From Across The Multiverse
Marvel Rivals will launch with 25 heroes to fill out its roster, with plenty more on the way. Each hero has a kit based around the character's in-universe powers and feels vastly different from each other. Some characters, such as Rocket Raccoon and Groot, even have a special synergy ability that can be used when both are on the same team. These abilities are not game-breaking, but they are a nice addition that puts more emphasis on team building, regardless of the game's meta or a character's tier in Marvel Rivals.
The 25 heroes that will be playable at launch are as follows:

Along with these 25, a good chunk of heroes has been predicted through datamining or hinted at through promotional material, including Doctor Doom, Wolverine, Ultron, and Vision. Overall, the list of potential characters that could be added is immense. The game already seems to be willing to use lesser-known/utilized characters, like Jeff or Hela, which is a good sign for the future. It will be interesting to see how frequently new characters are released after launch.
Dr. Doom has also been theorized to remain unplayable, as he's largely serving in a major position relating to the game's ongoing story.
Marvel Rivals already had excitement due to the popularity of the franchise, and it seems like that continued with the well-received closed beta. However, post-release content and balancing will play a huge part in the long-term success of the game. As Marvel Rivals' chief competitor will be Overwatch 2, which seems to always be on a rollercoaster of success, the comic shooter could siphon a lot of players if developed correctly. Until more information is known, likely before any announced beta or the game's full release, this is all that is currently known about Marvel Rivals.
