Marvel's "Crypt of Shadows" Returns For Another Highly-Anticipated Horror Anthology
Understanding The Curse Of Victor Strange
Crypt of Shadows has become a chance for Marvel’s unsung creatures of the night to take the spotlight before fading into the darkness until the series’ return a year later.
Marvel released the first installment of Crypt of Shadows in 1972 as a collection of reprinted horror stories from Atlas Comics, Marvel’s predecessor, dating back to 1954. Crypt of Shadows ran for twenty-one issuesm, until 1975 before ceasing publications until the title’s resurrection in 2019. Celebrating Marvel’s 80th anniversary, writer Al Ewing revived the anthology as a single issue of brand-new stories, but would take another two-year hiatus until the series was officially relaunched and revamped in 2022. Since then, it has been eagerly anticipated by fans as a staple of Marvel's fall release schedule.
Crypt of Shadows has now become an annual celebration of Marvel’s fan-favorite supernatural characters, releasing each October right before Halloween. Each year, fans are reintroduced to Victor Strange, now trapped in the mirror dimension and hidden beneath the Sanctum Santorum, who excitedly waits for readers to return each year to hear his scary stories. Featuring characters like Agatha Harkness, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and the Living Mummy, Crypt of Shadows has become a chance for Marvel’s unsung creatures of the night to take the spotlight before fading into darkness until the series’ return a year later.

With the ongoing Blood Hunt event, Marvel has already begun to embrace the historically underrepresented spine-chilling epics by pulling them onto center stage.
