Crystal Dynamics recently gave fans their first extended look at the background of AIM, the evil organization that has framed the Avengers, fans got a brief glimpse of another big bad: Abomination.
Abomination's presence in Marvel's Avengers has been known since the very first trailer, but the new footage has upped the stakes. In the “A-Day” trailer for Marvel's Avengers, fans saw the Hulk and Abomination fighting equally, but in the newest trailer Abomination pummels Hulk into a wall. It's rare to see the Hulk evenly matched, let alone bested, but that's nothing new to those who know about Abomination's rich history in comics.
Abomination is basically Hulk's evil doppelganger, just like Carnage is to Spider-Man. Created by Stan Lee and artist Gil Kane, Abomination first appeared in Tales to Astonish #90 when a Russian spy, Emil Blonsky, exposed himself to the same gamma radiation that transformed Bruce Banner into the Hulk. This means that not only does Abomination have the same powers as the Hulk, but thanks to being exposed to greater doses of gamma radiation, he is also more powerful – at least when the Hulk isn't at his angriest. Furthermore, unlike the Hulk, Abomination cannot return to his human form: the transformation into a monster is permanent, intensifying his bestial nature.
How Powerful Abomination Could Be In Marvel's Avengers
Movie-going Played by Tim Roth, Emil Blonsky is a British Royal Marine instead of a Russian spy in the film but, aside from that small difference, the movie gives audiences a solid understanding of the villain's destructive potential. The film's climax involves a showdown between Abomination and the Hulk, with Abomination nearly winning. Over the course of the fight, Abomination brutalizes the Hulk and, at one point, Abomination even uses his own bones to impale the green giant. It's only because Hulk's strength increases alongside his anger that he's able to manage a victory. Despite the loss, Abomination's brutality leaves its mark.
Even though Crystal Dynamics has not shown any gameplay involving Abomination, it's possible to surmise some of his abilities from the gameplay trailers involving Hulk. Players know the two share abilities, so it's plausible that in Marvel's Avengers, Abomination will employ a similar move-set. The trailer showcases Hulk's devastating ground pounds. The moves revealed are called “Gamma Hammer,” “Hammerhead,” and “Tantrum.” They are vicious, to be sure, and gamers can look forward to not just using them, but going up against them too.
Aside from the brutal, but brief, fight at the end of The Incredible Hulk (and the 2008 tie-in The Incredible Hulk Game) fans have not gotten to see Abomination's potential fulfilled on-screen. With Marvel's Avengers just around the corner, it may finally be time for Abomination to wreak some havoc.
