Marshall was known as the comionate one of the gang, stemming from his upbringing in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Marshall eventually married Lily and the couple had a few children. He often got himself involved in shenanigans while living in New York City. The How I Met Your Mother series finale confirmed that Marshall was elected as a New York State Supreme Court Judge in 2020. Around the same time, Marshall began to lose his hair due to the stress of his new gig, forcing him to wear a toupee. At some point following the finale, he and Lily had a third child. Considering his career revelation, Marshall and his family remained in New York well into their later lives.
More details into Marshall's life could be pieced together from scenes shown throughout the series. In 2029, Marshall was shown to be opening Lily's death letter, but she was not dead. She caught him opening the letter early and scolded him before revealing that the letter was a fake. The following year during the season 9 episode, "Rally," Marshall and Lily dropped a teenage Marvin off at college.
The most amusing look into Marshall's future came in How I Met Your Mother season 5 with the episode titled "The Window." Marshall wrote a letter to himself 29 years into the future, requesting that Future Marshall let him know if time travel existed. During that same episode, the older version of Marshall from the year 2038 was on the other side of MacLaren's Pub, returning a plate of wings that were too hot. He then sat and watched his younger self, proving that Marshall eventually learned how to travel through time.
