Ahsoka episode 4 revealed the truth about the show's mysterious Inquisitor Marrok, as well as his fate. With much of Ahsoka's cast being returning characters from Star Wars Rebels, the identities of few were versed in mystery. Prior to marketing, the show's biggest question was the location of Grand iral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger - until a cryptic Inquisitor with a mask appeared.
The identity of Ahsoka's mystery Inquisitor Marrok has led to endless speculation. A servant of dark side Force-s Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati and the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth, Marrok played a role as a secondary antagonist for Ahsoka Tano. From theories surrounding the canonization of Vader's secret apprentice Starkiller in Legends to Marrok being Ezra Bridger himself under the helmet, questions about the Inquisitor have led Ahsoka's discourse. After months of theorizing, Ahsoka episode 4 reveals the truth about Marrok.
Marrok Was Killed In His Duel With Ahsoka
With marketing teasing the fight and the heroes stranded in the forest of Seatos, a battle between Ahsoka and Marrok was inevitable. This duel coincided with a rematch between Shin Hati and Sabine Wren, as the dark siders were deployed to intercept the Jedi. Preceding her clash with Baylan, Ahsoka episode 4 saw the death of Marrok at the hands of Ahsoka. After a brief skirmish, Ahsoka decided to utilize her patience and allow Marrok to press himself on her. Upon doing so, Ahsoka avoided the Inquisitor's clumsy attack and sliced Marrok's midriff to win the confrontation and reveal the truth about his identity.
Marrok's Death Revealed His True Origin - A Nighbrother
Marrok's identity is tied directly to Morgan Elsbeth. With confirmation that the latter is a Nightsister of Dathomir, Marrok's true origin as a Nightbrother was revealed in Ahsoka episode 4. Ahsoka's cut with her lightsaber blade saw green smoke seep through the wound before Marrok's form disappeared completely amid the green-tinted fumes. This confirms his creation by Elsbeth as a Nightbrother, a being designed strictly to do his master's bidding.
This links to other iterations of Nightsister Magick seen throughout Star Wars canon. In the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the story's protagonist - Cal Kestis - travels to Dathomir. There, he finds a Nightsister named Merrin who reanimates fallen Nightbrothers as an undead army to attack the Jedi on her behalf. After their defeat, the Nightbrothers dissipate in the same green smoke seen after Marrok's demise in Ahsoka episode 4. As such, Marrok is a reanimated Nightbrother created by Elsbeth to act as her puppet.
Marrok Was Officially The First Inquisitor To Be A Non-Jedi
One of the more intriguing elements of Marrok's true fate is that he was the first Inquisitor in Star Wars canon not to be a fallen Jedi. In the past, every single member of the Inquisitorius was shown to be a former member of the Jedi Order. This not only helped to explain their powers in the Force, but also why they are perfect for hunting down remaining Jedi, as they once thought like their prey. From the various Inquisitors of Star Wars Rebels to the few featured in video games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the novel Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade, every canon Inquisitor has been a Jedi at one point in their life.
With Marrok though, this is not the case. While several theories placed Marrok as Barriss Offee, a former Jedi who served alongside and eventually betrayed Ahsoka, or the missing Jedi Ezra Bridger to continue this recurring theme of Star Wars' Inquisitors, his true nature in Ahsoka episode 4 bucks this trend. Marrok is not a former Jedi, instead being a creation of Morgan Elsbeth's Magick. Like the enemies found in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Marrok was a revived Nightbrother by Elsbeth with the latter holding dominion over his mind. When destroyed, the body dissipated into Magick, proving his non-Jedi status.
Marrok's True Identity Fits With Ahsoka Much Better Than Any Theories
Despite many likely being upset at Marrok's true identity due to the natural disappointment caused by fan speculation, his origin fits much better within the context of the Ahsoka's story. Most theories surrounding Marrok's identity, from Starkiller to Ezra Bridger and Barriss Offee, all required great leaps in logic, changes in character development, or the complete restructuring of Star Wars canon to come to fruition. Instead, making Marrok a creation of Elsbeth's Magick and a Nightbrother is much more logical.
This is also ed by the Arthurian connections held by the name Marrok. In old Arthurian myth, Marrok was one of the servants of King Arthur who was cursed by a witch. With Morgan Elsbeth similarly being named after the sorceress Morgan le Fay from Arthurian tales, the connections are prevalent. Marrok's curse came from his revival at the hands of the sorceress Morgan Elsbeth, which also explains his unwavering, unquestionable loyalty to her cause. While not aligning with the many theories spawned from the character's mysterious presence, Ahsoka episode 4's Marrok reveal marks a much better development for the narrative and characters.
