The Justice League recently expanded its roster to include nearly every hero in DC Comics’ sprawling comic book universe, with the future of the League looking brighter than ever as it continues to act as an unflappable force for good. In a new interview with the writer of the current Justice League Unlimited comic, it was revealed that for the first time in the team’s history, the Justice League will be “truly unlimited” in a way fans haven’t seen before.

Launching late last year to high acclaim, Justice League Unlimited, by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, saw the League open up enrollment to any hero who wanted it, with everyone from Batman and Superman to Captain Atom and Star Sapphire finally being part of one unified team.

In an exclusive Popverse interview with Mark Waid that touches on Justice League Unlimited’s storyline titled “We Are Yesterday,” a tale that will cross time periods and include present and past versions of the League, it’s revealed that there’s a point where “the Justice League truly becomes unlimited for the first time.”

Talking about how Mark Waid’s other book, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, will also tie into the time-traveling shenanigans that will be the focus of “We Are Yesterday,” it’s not until Waid speaks on time travel itself and the paradoxes that come with it that the idea of a “truly unlimited” League is mentioned. Saying, “…there is a point about the end of act two where because of this, the Justice League truly becomes unlimited for the first time, truly unlimited," Waid goes on to officially reveal that Justice League Unlimited #7 will be where the League "really does become unlimited."

Justice League Unlimited #1 ended with a shocking twist: a traitor was in the team's midst. Now, months later, this moment is finally paying off.

Saying how Justice League Unlimited #8 will close out “We are Yesterday” with some incredible artwork by artist Dan Mora — Waid teases that Mora drawing “800 characters a page” by the final chapter is “going to be something to see” — it’s the connotation of what a “truly unlimited” Justice League means that becomes the most exciting reveal from this interview. Will the League’s already sizable roster expand even further with the team’s past counterparts in tow? Or will the word “unlimited” simply act as a teaser for where in the DC universe — or multiverse — the League will bring justice next?

Regardless, starting with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38, “We Are Yesterday” promises some explosive action sprinkled with meaningful character moments — something Waid has excelled at balancing in his writing as of late — with the idea that the League will get even larger than it currently is being a wild development for not just the DC Universe, but fans who have appreciated the “everything and the kitchen sink” approach Justice League Unlimited has taken thus far. It remains to be seen how long the Justice League will stay “truly unlimited,” but for now, the tease of something greater can’t be undersold.
