The Magik, stars in a stunning piece of art from artist Maria Wolf. It was first seen as a cover for Women of Marvel #1 in 2021, and marks Wolf's first piece of cover art for Marvel Comics.
In April of 2021, Marvel Comics published Women of Marvel #1, a giant-sized anthology issue celebrating its female comic heroes, as well as the female creators who both bring those heroes to life. The issue includes the work of both established and rising comic stars including Mariko Tamaki, Elsa Sjunneson, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Sophie Campbell presenting stories featuring the likes of She-Hulk, Misty Knight, and Captain Peggy Carter. Artist Maria Wolf has gone on to draw variant covers for Marvel series such as Reptil, Carnage, Moon Knight, The Amazing Spider-Man, X-Force, Sabretooth, and the book Magik herself appears in, New Mutants.
In the ultra-exquisite detail that her artwork has become known for, Wolf depicts a decidedly demonic-looking Magik, in full-mystical Armor regalia, wielding her Soulsword. Even more impressive, however, is the background, featuring a mix of wolf-like creatures, oni, and other monsters, the image perfectly interprets the idea of the hellishness of Limbo. In a Tweet posted on the one-year anniversary of the issue, Maria Wolf commemorated her own anniversary as a Marvel cover artist.
Wolf's art accompanies Magik's persona beautifully, as her command over magic and her mutant power of teleportation has given the New Mutants comics an extra horror edge over the years. She looks undeniably brave as she charges through hordes of monsters in Limbo, bringing to life the toughness that has defined her character for decades. The mix of fierceness and monster horror in Wolf's cover makes it feel unique to Magik, while also showing off Wolf's individual artistic style.
Women of Marvel #1 sought to not only and promote its female characters, but also female comics creators such as Maria Wolf. Artists such as Peach Momoko, Amanda Conner, Stephanie Hans, and Sabine Rich all drew variant covers in addition to Wolf. The impact of Women of Marvel #1 for Wolf has been huge, as her work with Marvel Comics has proliferated since. Understandably, we haven't seen the last of Maria Wolf's magnificent cover art. The Magik cover art for Marvel clearly shows that she's an artist on the rise.
