Magic: The Gathering and other popular franchises like Fallout, Spider-Man, and even SpongeBob SquarePants, the MTG x FF collab melds characters, concepts, and art from the legendary RPG series with the ever-popular collectible card game. Due for release on June 13, 2025, the set includes four new commanders, and countless new cards featuring callbacks to every mainline Final Fantasy game.
Wizards of the Coast provided a first look at its MTG x FF set in an hour-long livestream on the official Magic Twitch channel. Featuring first glimpses at many of the new cards, as well as deep dives into how its four new precon commander decks work, the livestream was full of big reveals: players were given in-depth looks at how Final Fantasy's various mascots feature in the new set, a new Saga card featuring the iconic summon Shiva, the four new commanders (Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola), and the design philosophy behind it all.
New Cards And Commanders Are Coming In The MTG X FF Set
Highlights From FF6, 7, 10, 14, & More
Many of Final Fantasy's recurring mascots were confirmed to be featured in the set. Among them are the knife-wielding Tonberry, the Jumbo Cactuar, and the Moogle merchant Stiltzkin, who'll be available as both a regular and a borderless card (the latter with woodblock art). Chocobos will also be represented in at least one way, with the 0/1 creature Sazh's Chocobo, which powers up every time the player gains a land. Summons will also appear in the set; Shiva, who features as a Saga, makes an appearance.
The MTG x FF set also revealed the return of double-faced cards. As characters in Final Fantasy frequently have multiple forms, or go through immense character development - see Terra's Trance, Bizarro Sephiroth, Cecil's whole character arc - many of them will feature as double-faced cards, with different abilities on each side. By satisfying certain conditions, players may transform these cards, summoning more powerful forms of them to change the game completely.
Magic: The Gathering's Aetherdrift Set Is A Mess, & That's Okay
Magic: The Gathering's first set of 2025 is all over the place, but Aetherdrift is meant to feature multiple planes and different characters.
The set also features four new preconstructed commander decks: one each featuring Terra (FF6), Cloud (FF7), Tidus (FF10), and Y'shtola (FF14). The livestream revealed both extended art and borderless versions of all four, available in regular and collector's editions. This is just one of the ways you can buy the collaborative set; play boosters, collector boosters, and a starter pack will all be available.
The livestream also revealed that two iconic Final Fantasy artists and character designers will be returning to contribute art for the series: Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura. Amano's art graces a reprint of Ancient Copper Dragon (here renamed Dragon of Mt. Gulg), while Nomura's portrait of Yuffie is featured on a reprint of Yuriko, The Tiger's Shadow.

During the livestream, the design team spoke about the process of creating this set, and all the care that went into it. They prioritized including every mainline entry to the point that they had to put limitations on how much spinoff content they could include. The goal is to ensure that everyone's favorite mainline FF is represented, and that appears to have been executed beautifully here. With classic designers returning It's clear that the Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collaboration was made with a lot of love.
