Luke Skywalker uses numerous Force abilities in the Return of the Jedi, focusing on Luke Skywalker's decision to establish a new Jedi Order and his growth in his powers. These stories were all once considered canon, but Lucasfilm branded them "Legends" after they were acquired by Disney in 2012.

The Legends version of Luke Skywalker is more powerful than canon, continuing to grow as a character after Return of a Jedi, and his development continues in a far more consistent manner given readers experienced the journey with him. Through numerous victories, failures, and undying devotion to his loved ones and the people of the galaxy, the Legends version of Luke seemed to fulfill the potential connection to the Force promised (but never achieved) by Anakin Skywalker himself. Here are all the powers Luke demonstrated in Legends that have not been used by his Disney-era counterpart.

Force Protection

Luke Skywalker battles a fireworm in Star Wars Legends.

Jedi possess the ability to create protective telekinetic barriers around themselves, a power demonstrated in both canon and Legends - but one Luke Skywalker only used in the Expanded Universe. In Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Search, Luke was able to walk over the surface of a lava lake - one of his most impressive demonstrations of Force power. His clothes were singed but his body was unharmed. Luke used the same power in Troy Denning's Dark Nest I: The er King, shielding himself from a massive explosion.

Battle Meditation

Battle meditation, also known as Force melding, allows a Force to link their minds with others (Force-sensitive or otherwise) and empowers them, boosting their effectiveness in battle. When Force-s are linked, their actions become synchronized, making them even stronger. Luke Skywalker was able to best the resurrected Emperor Palpatine in a duel in Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy's Dark Empire comic book event, with Leia empowering him through battle meditation. Luke used the same power to bond with his Legends wife, Mara Jade, in Timothy Zahn's Vision of the Future. He later used battle meditation to lead New Republic forces to war in Walter Jon Williams' Destiny's Way.

Resist Ysalamiri

Ysalamiri in Star Wars Legends.

In Legends, the Inner Rim world of Myrkr is home to lizards known as ysalamiri, who repel any use of the Force within a certain proximity. This power was evolved as a defense against predators that used the Force, and Imperial leaders such as Grand iral Thrawn used ysalamiri against Jedi. Since blocking the Force (a fundamental element of the galaxy itself) is not possible, ysalamiri simply prevent anything near them from using Force abilities. As revealed in James Luceno's Agents of Chaos I: Hero's Trial, Luke Skywalker can resist the Force-repelling abilities of the ysalamiri.

Electric Judgement

Luke Skywalker using Electric Judgment

Force lightning is a dark side Star Wars power used only by the strongest SIth Lords, but there is an equivalent ability uncorrupted by the dark side and rarely used by Jedi. Darth Plagueis disparaged Electric Judgment as a "facsimile" of the Sith power, given the Jedi draws upon the Force through nature rather than corrupting it. Luke used the power in James Luceno's The Unifying Force to defeat an alien Yuuzhan Vong warrior.

Force Concealment

Sith Lords and dark side practitioners have long concealed their presence in the Force, but Luke Skywalker and other Jedi are known to have done the same in the Legends continuity. In Troy Denning's Star By Star, Luke makes his presence in the Force seemingly disappear, preventing Jaina and Jacen Solo from sensing him. In an even more impressive feat, Luke masks his presence as well as that of others around him in Denning's Dark Nest II: The Unseen Queen.

Enhance Strength

A rather unusual Jedi Force power allows a Jedi to augment their physical strength, lifting objects that would otherwise be too heavy or to deliver catastrophically powerful blows. Luke uses Force-enhanced strength to physically overpower numerous Yuuzhan Vong warriors throughout The New Jedi Order novels. He also uses Force-enhanced strength in Troy Denning's Dark Nest Trilogy, breaking through spinglass (which is implied to be as tough as starship hull) and effortlessly shattering a lightsaber crystal.

Fold Space

Grand Master Luke Skywalker trains Jedi in Star Wars Legends.

In Legends, Luke Skywalker learned from other Force traditions - not just the Jedi. He spent time with a group called the Aing-Tii monks, who possess the power to teleports objects (or themselves) through space. Star Wars canon has explored other Force traditions, and the Aing-Tii have indeed been mentioned in canon, but their abilities have yet to be mentioned. Luke Skywalker showed he could teleport across vast distances in Christie Golden's Fate of the Jedi: Omen.

Ayna-Seff

Luke & Ben Skywalker meet with Baran Do sages in Star Wars Legends.

Luke Skywalker also learned the unique Force power of Ayna-seff from the Baran Do sages, a Kel Dor Force-using group from Dorin. Similar to Force concealment, Ayna-seff made its s’ brains undetectable by masking them with a form of electromagnetic radiation. In the Fate of the Jedi series, Luke Skywalker uses Ayna-seff to protect the late Mara Jade’s starship, the Jade Shadow, as it traversed the Kathol Rift.

Shatterpoint

Mace Windu promotional shot from Star Wars

An extremely rare and esoteric Force power made famous by Jedi Master Mace Windu, shatterpoints allow their s to see weak points in objects, opponents, and even situations. Like Mace Windu before him, Luke Skywalker is a superlative Force- and lightsaber combatant, but these skills are exponentially augmented by his ability to detect the precise weaknesses of his enemies and their schemes. Although Luke has not been shown using this ability, Troy Denning's Legacy of the Force: Invincible revealed he had taught it to his Star Wars Legends niece, Jaina Solo.

Oneness

Luke Skywalker as a Force Ghost

One of the greatest feats for any Jedi is retaining their consciousness upon becoming one with the Force. Although Luke Skywalker returns as a Force ghost after his deaths in both the canon and Legends continuity, the latter had Luke enter this state several times before his demise. In James Luceno's The Unifying Force, Luke Skywalker temporarily achieves the state of Oneness, defeating countless Yuuzhan Vong warriors as he confronts their leader Shimrra Jamaane. Luke would go on to use this ability again in his conflict with an apocalyptic dark side being in the Fate of the Jedi novels, combining it with one more remarkable Force power.

Traversing Beyond Shadows

Abeloth in Star Wars Legends showing her disturbing smile with teeth

One of the most powerful dark side beings in Legends, Abeloth resides in a realm where Force-s separate their minds from their bodies, called "beyond shadows." Luke is able to travel beyond shadows to learn of Abeloth and later battles her, combining his traversal beyond shadows with Oneness to destroy her at the same time he battles with Darth Krayt. The Jedi Master combines two of the most astounding Force powers in one of the greatest victories of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
