Amazon’s TV series, the Dark Lord Sauron will likely be adapted, and the Elven prince’s death is far more intense than anything shown in the franchise thus far.

Celebrimbor was a Ñoldorin Elf prince who became a master ring-maker. Working alongside a disguised Sauron, he crafted the three rings of power for the Elves, which were instrumental to Sauron’s plans of conquest. The Elven rings, like those crafted for the Dwarves and men, were bound to Sauron’s One Ring, which he nearly used to corrupt the three Elven leaders. While the nine Men were corrupted, the Dwarves resisted Sauron’s power and the Elves avoided it by taking their rings off.

After Sauron failed to corrupt the Elven Kings, Celebrimbor hid the rings from the Dark Lord, leading to his capture by Sauron. The Dark Lord tortured Celebrimbor, who died before revealing the locations of the three Elven rings. The Lord of the Rings film trilogies feature plenty of brutal deaths, but nothing quite like Celebrimbor’s slow death by torture, making his potential demise in The Rings of Power something of a first for the live-action franchise.

Celebrimbor forges a new Ring of Power in Middle-Earth: Shadow of War

In most cases, character deaths in the Lord of the Rings franchise are relatively tame. While beheadings and other brutal deaths in battle are common, slow and torturous deaths are generally avoided. Gollum’s torture in Mordor was heard in the franchise's first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring, but it wasn’t shown and Gollum survived his ordeal. Before he became Gollum, however, Sméagol brutally strangled his cousin, Déagol, upon being corrupted by the One Ring.

Celebrimbor is confirmed to appear in Rings of Power, played by Charles Edwards. The series will explore Middle-earth’s Second Age and the rise of Sauron in general, but Celebrimbor’s life will be explored as well. Celebrimbor forged three of the lesser Rings of Power, and his defiance towards the Dark Lord, as well as his capture and torturous death, is a key event in the War of the Elves and Sauron, which began with the Siege of Eregion. Celebrimbor’s brutal death at the hands of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be relatively new territory for the live-action Lord of the Rings franchise.
