One of the biggest twists in the second season of turned Michael into a murderer, leaving a huge impact on all of Michael's future appearances on the show. As well as this, the act allowed Michael to betray the trust of Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley, leading them all into a trap set by The Others, while Michael was given a boat off the island, setting up the plot for the show's third season.

This changed the tone of the show, allowing a shift in dynamics between the second and third seasons. The second season focused more on the mystery of the island, with the survivors living on the beach. It was clear that season 3 would be completely different. Season 3 was more based on the history of The Others, their purpose and how they got on the island in the first place, meanwhile Jack, Kate and Sawyer were trapped as their prisoners. This shift in dynamic wouldn't have happened if Michael hadn't betrayed the group and killed Ana Lucia and Libby.

Ana Lucia and Libby’s Murders Led To An Abrupt Stop To Their Stories

Just As They Were Being Accepted By The Survivors, Their Stories Came To An End

Ana Lucia was met with a frosty reception when she arrived, as she accidentally killed Shannon Rutherford. However, the survivors were beginning to forgive her and Jack was starting to grow close to her. It was even revealed shortly before her death that the reason Ana Lucia was on the plane was because she was in Sydney working as Jack's father, Christian's bodyguard. It's a shame the character's story came to an abrupt stop, as she had so much potential. It would have been interesting to see Ana Lucia use her experience as a cop to fight against The Others.

Although Libby had less screen time than Ana Lucia, her death was probably more emotional for Hurley's sake. Libby and Hurley were slowly forming a romantic connection. Libby was in the hatch collecting a picnic blanket for their first date when she was shot by Michael. In the following episodes, Hurley really struggles to get over Libby's death. Although Libby's death meant that her love story with Hurley came to an end, a new story about grief and revenge was able to begin. Unfortunately, Libby was the one for Hurley, and he never found anyone else after her untimely death.

Ana And Libby's Death Turned Michael Into A Murderer

The Decision To Kill Ana Lucia And Libby Stuck With Michael For The Rest Of His Life

Killing Ana Lucia and Libby was one of the Lost. This mistake heavily impacted Michael's future storylines on the show. The act led to his own son disowning him, leaving Michael with nothing to live for. Michael had a shocking return to Lost's fourth season under the alias Kevin Johnson. In this season, he was undercover working on a freighter that was on its way to an expedition to harm the island and everyone on it, so Michael put himself in danger to save everyone as penance for the murders he committed.

Michael made one further appearance in the season 6 episode "Everybody Loves Hugo", where he appeared as a ghost to Hurley. Michael is trapped on the island, unable to move on to a better afterlife because of what he did to Ana Lucia and Libby. He offered Hurley help, pointing out where he could find John Locke. Michael then apologized for killing Libby, before Hurley walked away. Although he committed the murders in the season 2 episode "Two For The Road", the act follows Michael around throughout the rest of his time on the show.

The Survivors Wanted Revenge On The Others, Changing Lost's Dynamic For Season 3

Michael Blamed Ana Lucia And Libby's Murders On 'The Others', Making The Survivors Seek Vengence

After Michael shot Ana Lucia and Libby, Michael made it seem that The Others were the ones that killed Ana and Libby. Knowing that the survivors wouldn't let it go, he led them straight into the trap set up by The Others so he could escape the island. This set up the story for season 3 of the show, completely shifting the dynamic altogether. Before the third season, the show mainly focused on the ensemble cast living on the beech, but the third season saw more of a focus on Jack, Kate, and Sawyer, trapped in The Others' base.
