Daedelic Entertainment's The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game is centered on one of the franchise's most recognizable characters. Not only will Gollum be playable, but his alter ego, Sméagol, will also factor into the game's roleplaying experience. Character art was recently released for additional LOTR characters - Gandalf, Thranduil and the Mouth of Sauron. Any number of character reveals could lie ahead, but many characters aren't likely to appear in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
Set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the game follows Gollum "From his time as a slave below the Dark Tower [in Mordor] to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood." The breadth of Gollum's journey during this time indicates characters like Aragorn and Shelob will likely show up at some point. However, LOTR: Gollum's place on the timeline also means several characters canonically can't.
Bilbo acquires the One Ring from Gollum in the year 2941, during Middle-earth's Third Era, and Gollum begins his search for it three years later. This eventually takes him to Mordor, where he is captured by Sauron "At some time" in the eight years following 3009, according to The Return of the King's Appendix B. He is then released in 3017 and captured by Aragorn, who brings him to Mirkwood.
The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum - Characters Who Can't Or Won't Likely Appear
Characters Who've Died Already
Many of the main characters from The Hobbit, who Gollum might know to be Bilbo's traveling companions, died just before Gollum embarked on his journey to find the Ring and therefore likely won't appear in The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum. This includes Fili, Kili, Bolg, Thorin Oakenshield and the dragon Smaug. Likewise, Balin's death, and the subsequent destruction of Moria, occurs in 2994.
Characters Who Aren't Born Yet
If The Lord of The Rings: Gollum's story begins in 3009, nearly every major character from the books would be of a reasonable age to appear. Even Pippin, the youngest of the Fellowship, would be 19 already. That said, if the game begins closer to the timeframe of The Hobbit, none of the hobbits would be born, and several human characters would be either very young (Aragorn, Denethor) or not yet born (Théoden, Boromir, Faramir, Éowyn).
Characters Who Gollum Wouldn't Ever Meet
Besides Aragorn, however, none of these humans are documented to have met Gollum before the time of the books. Even if they do appear in the game, it would almost certainly be in ing, and Gollum is such a sneaky creature that he would likely avoid any such encounters.
Unless he is shown in a flashback, Bilbo likewise won't be one of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum's characters, either. He chronicles his journeys very thoroughly, and he makes no mention of seeing Gollum again after their riddle-filled cave encounter. To that point, despite being of age by his time in Mordor and Mirkwood, Gollum never made it to the Shire during his search - though he was on the way when Aragorn intercepted him. As hobbits tend to stay home in their community, it's highly unlikely any of them would be caught up in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum's narrative.
