Director Kate Herron calls Jonathan Majors a chameleon after the actor's debut in the Loki finale. Majors plays He Who Remains in the recently-finished Disney+ series, the being who's really behind the Time Variance Authority/TVA. While he died in the same episode, expect to see more of him in the franchise moving forward.
There were already doubts about the legitimacy of the TVA from the beginning. Supposedly created by the Time-Keepers, Loki couldn't simply get on board with the idea that three space lizards decide the fate of the universe. Ultimately, some of his theories turned out to be correct after the Time-Keepers were revealed to be fakes. But that only further motivated him and Sylvie (Sophia di Martino), a female Loki variant who was unceremoniously plucked from her timeline, to get to the bottom of the mystery. Thanks to the help of their allies including Agent Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant), who sacrificed himself to destroying the Alioth, they ultimately got their face-to-face with He Who Remains at his Citadel at the End of Time
Majors' debut in Loki had been posited online countless times, still, his appearance remained to be surprising, especially given what happened in the WandaVision finale. As it turns out, the actor was cast first in Loki before boarding Ant-Man and the Wasp as Kang the Conqueror. Herron calls the actor a chameleon in a new interview with THR when talking about his acting skills. She adds that this is important since he would be playing different versions of himself moving forward.
Jonathan Majors is an actor that we were all just blown away by; I think everyone who knows his work is blown away by him. He’s an amazing actor, and the thing that I love about him is that he’s this chameleon. He’s so different in everything he does, and that’s exciting, obviously, when you’re asking an actor to play a character who’s going to have a lot of different versions of himself. So for us, that was a thrill. And when I knew we had Jonathan, he and I were solely focused on He Who Remains and this version of the character, this variant.
An up and rising star, Lovecraft Country where his portrayal as Atticus Freeman earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama series. Now, however, it's safe to say that the MCU is going to occupy the majority of his time moving forward as he is set up to play the next big crossover threat in the comic book franchise.
Thus far, Majors is only confirmed to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given the narrative connection between the aforementioned projects, it's not outside the realm of possibility that a variant of He Who Remains factors in the Sam Raimi-directed sequel.
