Tom Hiddleston returns as the god of mischief in Time Variance Authority and shown what was supposed to happen in his life before he changed the sacred timeline.

Since this isn't the same Loki who appeared in the MCU from 2011 to 2018, the Disney+ series has labeled him as a variant. He receives this label because he has diverged from the planned sequence of events. Loki explains that people can become variants no matter how big or small their unforeseen actions are. Once someone becomes a variant, the TVA brings them to court to see whether or not they can be reset and placed back in their original timeline or if they have to be erased from existence altogether. Luckily for Loki, Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) steps in to suggest that the god of mischief can be of aid to the TVA instead of the latest person to be "pruned" from the multiverse.

Loki follows one variant of Mr. Laufeyson but more will appear. It is confirmed that multiple versions of the character will be featured in the show in some capacity. The end of Loki's first episode even teased one playing a vital role in the series, as Loki will work with the TVA to track down another Loki variant who is causing chaos in the universe. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm which Loki variants fans will see, but thanks to set photos, rumors, and speculation, there are multiple that fans can likely count on seeing.

Lady Loki

Lady Loki is widely expected to appear in Loki as the other primary variant featured in the show. Marvel Studios cast Sophia Di Martino for the series in an undisclosed role, but early rumors suggested she could be the female version of Loki. Set photos later showed the actress in a variation of Loki's costume. It is expected that Lady Loki is the variant teased at the end of the first episode and hidden beneath the dark cloak. Loki's trailers have barely teased her involvement, other than fans spotting her blonde hair and many mistakingly thinking Lady Loki was Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. Her likely appearance will come after the show has confirmed Loki is gender fluid, meaning the character can take on different forms - like Lady Loki - as the comics have done.

Loki's transformation into Lady Loki came after the event known as Ragnarok in the comics. This storyline saw Loki and the rest of Asgard - except Thor - die and not be able to come back to life. This was later fixed and the majority of Asgardians came back in new bodies. However, Lady Sif's spirit was trapped and that allowed Loki to take control of the body meant for her. This marked the beginning of Loki's transformation into Lady Loki. The female form was Loki's main look from this point on through some major Marvel events, such as Dark Reign. Even after Loki reclaimed his male form, the character became more comfortable with transforming into each form. It is not yet known what Lady Loki's future in the MCU will be, but her introduction in Loki can make her part of the multiverse equation - as long as she survives the events of the series.

Classic Loki / King Loki

What Richard E. Grant Could Look Like as Old Loki

There are also plenty of rumors about an older version of Loki, possibly known as Classic Loki, appearing as another variant. Speculation about an older Loki popped up not too long after Richard E. Grant ed the show. Grant is a terrific actor who is no stranger to playing villains, so tackling an older version of Loki who remained evil is right up his ally. The rumors about this Loki variant increased following a credit on IMDb (that has since been removed) for a stunt double that was labeled as "Classic Loki." Since Loki is exploring different timelines and the lead character's purpose in the universe, meeting a version of himself that never had a redemption story could influence the 2012 Loki variant's decisions.

The comic version of Classic Loki is what the original Loki is unofficially known as. This Loki had one continuous story from his debut in the early 1960s to his death in the Siege storyline. While the 2012 variant in Loki mentions that he doesn't like hurting people, that is not true of Classic Loki. He is almost entirely evil and easily earns his nicknames as the god of mischief and god of chaos. There is also an older Loki in the comics known as King Loki who represents the future of Loki after he is reborn. This equally evil version of Loki secretly works with the All-Mother and can explore different points in time at ease. That ability allowed him to create a powerful sword known as Gram, which reveals any hidden truths of the person it stabs. Either older version of Loki likely wouldn't have much of a future in the MCU at large, but they could still serve a purpose in the story of the show's main variant.

Kid Loki

Kid Loki wondering why people always think he's lying

It is also rumored that Loki will introduce Kid Loki to the MCU. Some of the earliest rumors about the Disney+ show claimed that it would mostly focus on a younger Loki so that this version of the character could take over for Hiddleston in future stories. That is not the direction Loki ultimately took, but that doesn't mean Kid Loki won't appear. Rumors point to the young actor Jack Veal playing Kid Loki in the series. He's confirmed his involvement in the series, even though his role is still unconfirmed. If Veal is playing a younger version of Loki, it is possible that this could happen through flashbacks. However, a variant Kid Loki has more appeal to the MCU's future.

The origin of Kid Loki in the comics comes during the Siege storyline, as Loki convinced Hela to remove his name from the Book of Hel so that he could be reborn should he die. Loki's rebirth originally saw him not have any memories of his past life until Thor restored parts of his memory. Kid Loki tried to become more of a hero and even worked with the Young Avengers for a time. Marvel Studios is bringing most of the main Young Avengers to the MCU during Phase 4, so adding Kid Loki to the mix makes sense. Now fans will just have to see if Kid Loki does appear in Loki before the season ends.

Loki releases new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
