WARNING! This article contains spoilers for The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 and Michael Connelly's book The Gods of Guilt!

Summary

  • The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 left out a crucial twist involving Mickey Haller's rival, which actually opens the possibility for his rival Andy's return in season 3.
  • Andrea Freeman could become Mickey's campaign rival for District Attorney in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3, continuing the competitive dynamic between the two characters.
  • Even if Mickey doesn't run for District Attorney, Andrea Freeman could still take on the role or have a subplot involving her campaign in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3.

Although Andrea Freeman’s story technically ended in The Fifth Witness book, Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer’s new character Andrea Freeman is played by Yaya DaCosta, who s season 2 as a talented prosecutor with an undefeated record against defense attorney Mickey Haller. However, Mickey breaks her streak in The Lincoln Lawyer season 2’s ending when he wins the case, landing his client Lisa Trammell a “not guilty” verdict.

Despite this being the end of the character’s story in Michael Connelly’s books, The Lincoln Lawyer’s showrunner intends for Andrea Freeman to return. This would require substantial changes to the books for Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer season 3, but isn’t out of the realm of possibility considering a few key developments were already dropped in season 2’s ending. With a crucial twist in The Fifth Witness’s ending regarding Mickey’s career being left out of The Lincoln Lawyer’s season 2 finale, Mickey’s rival Andy could fulfill this missing story in season 3, as the seeds were already laid in her early into her series introduction.

Mickey & Andy Can Run Against Each Other For DA In Lincoln Lawyer Season 3

Lincoln Lawyer Andrea and Mickey

At the end of The Lincoln Lawyer season 2’s book The Fifth Witness, Mickey announces that he intends to run for Los Angeles’ District Attorney. However, this major plot point is absent from The Lincoln Lawyer season 2’s ending, instead being replaced by the twist reveal of Glory Days’ death, which occurs in the novel The Gods of Guilt. This seems to suggest that Mickey won’t be running for DA in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3’s plot, but it’s still possible that the Netflix series could revive this storyline by making Andrea Freeman his campaign rival. Andy is Deputy District Attorney in The Lincoln Lawyer season 2, but she could seek the top role in season 3.

However, Mickey’s run for District Attorney in The Gods of Guilt is short-lived after a client who he helped beat a DUI charge is later responsible for killing two people in a drunk-driving incident. As such, The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 could simply avoid this storyline altogether, unless the series chooses to rewrite it in a way that brings Andy back into the fold with Mickey. After brilliantly playing rivals in The Lincoln Lawyer season 2’s Lisa Trammell case, Andy and Mickey’s dynamic could be utilized for competition in a cut-throat District Attorney campaign.

Andy Can Still Take The District Attorney Role In Season 3 (Even If Mickey Doesn’t Run)

If The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 does decide to drop Mickey’s District Attorney campaign altogether, this book storyline can still be recycled with Andrea Freeman. Since Mickey’s run for District Attorney is already unsuccessful in the books, the series could choose to give Andy this position outright or depict her campaign for the position as a subplot in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3. This way, Andy would continue to play an important role in the world of The Lincoln Lawyer as a recurring character, sending out deputy and assistant district attorneys to battle Mickey in future court cases.
