There are plenty of insect collectibles in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, including the Dragonfly, which can only be found in specific locations. Bugs like the Dragonfly can be caught in large numbers and used as ingredients to craft important items. However, they are also used as key items for important quests and substories, making it worth knowing where you can track down each insect type.
Another reason you'll want to collect Dragonflies and other insects is due to how insects are sometimes used as requirements to recruit new crew . Part of the fun of LAD: Pirate Yakuza comes from hiring unique crewmates to sail the seas with you. Getting more insects to gather more allies will make naval battles much easier as you continue your sea-faring adventures.

Search The Corners Of The High Seas For Rare Insects
There are three locations on your map where you can find a Dragonfly, with some areas requiring you to progress the main story to unlock them. Dragonflies are quick, elusive insects that dart around small bodies of freshwater. While you won't find any along the ocean's coast, you'll likely spot one or two you can catch among the reeds of lakes and rivers.
The demo of LAD: Pirate Yakuza may have included only one of the possible Dragonfly spawn locations, but the game's full release has several more areas where you can look for the insect.
More locations could host Dragonfly insects, but in far smaller numbers than the main places around Honolulu you can explore. Try looking for freshwater around the city to find a Dragonfly, as this type of landmark usually hosts the flying bug. Butterflies will also be common in these areas, so collect some of those insects too as you're gathering insect ingredients.
Harbor Park
One of the most common spots to find Dragonflies is Anaconda Harbor Park, which is directly south of Harbor Street in Honolulu. This park has a wide lake where Dragonflies dart around, making them somewhat difficult to catch. However, this space is small and Dragonflies that spawn here will rarely venture out onto the nearby street, so the enclosed area makes them easier to pin down.

Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii Review - A Rare Treasure, Though Occasionally Lost At Sea
Fan-favorite Goro Majima stars in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, a thoroughly fun and unflinchingly self-indulgent romp that sometimes loses direction.
This area should be the first place you visit to catch a Dragonfly or two, as it is close to where the Goromaru is anchored. From where you dock, you can easily walk to Harbor Park to nab a Dragonfly or two from among the other insects that tend to hang around this part of the city.
Riverside Walk
Another location where you can find Dragonflies is Riverside Walk, a long canal-like river that stretches through the city. From Anaconda Blvd., head east until you come across the bridge connecting to Aloha Street across the river. Most Dragonflies tend to spawn underneath Aloha Bridge, where more plants grow and there's enough shade to escape the sun's heat.
If you're having trouble finding Riverside Walk, head east from the Anaconda Shopping Center to spot this location right next to the large building full of different vendors.
That being said, plenty of Dragonflies will appear along the entire length of Riverside Walk. You can check areas under the connecting bridge between Harbor and River Streets to nab a Dragonfly or two as you travel across the walkway adjacent to the canal.
Sakura Street
Near the northeast of Honolulu, you can find Dragonflies at the corner of Makani Avenue as it transitions into Sakura Street. This area is easy to travel to if you have the W Sakura St. or E Sakura St. fast travel spots, which allows taxis to take you to this location instantly. Using fast travel allows you to avoid a few mistakes in LAD: Pirate Yakuza as you search for the right Dragonfly hunting spots.
Traveling north from Little Japan will lead you to Sakura Street in due time. The northern borders of your map here lead out into the water, where Dragonflies are scattered in great numbers. This is the location with perhaps the most amount of Dragonflies, but they are harder to catch since the insects are dispersed over a larger area.
How To Recruit A New Crew Member Using Dragonflies
Catch Rare Variants Of The Normal Insects
Those who manage to find Gold and Silver variants of Dragonflies in their spawning locations will be able to recruit Bug Professor Louis to their crew. This potential crewmate will only you if you give him a Golden Dragonfly, a rare variant of normal Dragonflies that is indistinguishable from the normal insects you gather from around the city.
I've found that the Bug Professor is a decent crew member, especially when you're getting started on your sea-faring journey. With how easy the Bug Professor is to recruit, I recommend getting him on your ship as soon as you can. Once you do manage to recruit him, the Bug Professor has these stats:
Bug Professor Louis Stats |
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
HP |
Defense |
Attack |
Cannon Power |
Ship Upkeep |
1265 HP |
F Rank |
F Rank |
E Rank |
E Rank |
Keep in mind that you need the Grappling Hook item unlocked from the main story to catch a Golden Dragonfly needed to recruit Bug Professor Louis to your crew.
Golden Dragonflies don't start spawning until you speak to Professor Louis first, so make sure to visit the NPC before you start hunting for insect variants. The Bug Professor can be found northwest of Anaconda Blvd. or northeast of Sunset St. as you explore the city. When you talk to him, you can start finding Golden, Silver, and normal Dragonflies at all their spawning locations in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
