While PlayStation's February 2025 State of Play announced a lot for players to be excited about, perhaps one of the most exciting reveals was the teaser trailer for the Lies of P DLC, Overture. While many details, including a specified release date, are still unknown for now, there are a few things to be gleaned from this reveal.

Firstly, it is confirmed that the Overture DLC will be coming later this summer and that it will serve as a prequel DLC to the story of Lies of P. Heading back in time, Pinocchio will get to explore Krat, as well as some other new locations, in the days leading up to the brutal puppet massacre, leaving players to wonder if it's better to play Overture first, and if it's even possible to do so.

Yes, The Base Game Is Required To Play Overture DLC

Despite Being A Prequel, Overture Cannot Be Played Before Lies Of P

Since this is not a standalone title, players will unfortunately not have the freedom to choose which they would like to play first. Per the official teaser trailer that was showcased during PlayStation's February 2025 State of Play, the base game will be required to play Overture. Furthermore, even if the option to play it first was available to players, it wouldn't be recommended to do so.

Lies Of P Overture DLC Gets New Grisly New Trailer & Release Window

During the February State of Play, the long-awaited DLC for Lies of P has received a new trailer, revealing new gameplay and a release window.

Despite being a prequel story, playing it first would likely spoil things to come later while also taking away from the intended feel of the Lies of P follow-up DLC. Playing as Pinocchio, players are intended to experience the aftermath of this horrifying tragedy first as they come to understand what's happened throughout Lies of P, which then makes returning to the days leading up to it that much more foreboding. If you've not seen what Krat will descend into, Overture would likely not have the intended effect.

Those Who Have Yet To Pick Up Lies Of P Still Have Time

Since there are still a few months before Overture drops this summer, there's plenty of time for anyone hoping to play it to finish Lies of P. As stated, the base game will be required to play the DLC, but more than that, it will likely only be accessible in a mid-late game area. This means that simply buying Lies of P will likely not be enough to play the DLC and at least partial progress will need to be made.

10 Biggest Games Missing From State Of Play (February 2025)

The February 2025 State of Play had plenty of great reveals, but key games were missing from the presentation that definitely deserved to be there.

That being said, it's still recommended that the entire base game be finished before moving on as it will not only add to the story of Overture but help prepare for it. FromSoftware's Soulsborne games have a history of their DLCs being significantly more challenging than the base game, and this Soulslike is expected to be no different, since Lies of P is arguably the best non-FromSoft take on the subgenre. Therefore, if you play through the DLC midway through Lies of P, there will likely be a noticeable decline in difficulty once returning to finish the rest of the game, detracting from the overall experience.

ESRB
M For Mature 17+ Due To Blood, Violence

Following in the footsteps of games similar to Bloodborne, Lies of P is an action-RPG adventure game with heavy Souls-like influences. Loosely based on the tale of Pinocchio, Lies of P throws players into the shoes of the reimagined wooden boy as a puppet mechanoid as he wakes up in a city devoid of life. Pinocchio has only one clue as to what's happening to him; a single note telling him to find Mr. Gepetto.

Players will battle through the city of Krat free of humans as they struggle against other mechanical and hellish monsters that await them at every turn. To face these threats, players can craft various weapons using devices found throughout the city and gain new attachments to improve traversal. The ending can be significantly affected depending on the player's narrative and action-based choices. Lies of P will be released on current and next-gen consoles and PC sometime in 2023.
