LG's OLED s for televisions are the best in the industry. In fact, most other OLED TV manufacturers source their OLED s from LG. Thanks to its lead, LG has the option to experiment with flexible and bendable television displays. Although they might not be for everyone, these experimental models usually come with some additional design benefits, such as the ability to be more easily hidden away.
LG is now taking its television business mobile. In a press release, LG announced its new StanbyME TV, a 27-inch battery-powered mounted display that takes the standard TV experience and puts it on wheels. The display can be swiveled, tilted, and rotated in both portrait and landscape orientations to help s find the perfect angle. The stand's height can also be adjusted. In addition to the traditional remote, the TV can be navigated via touch and gestures. When a larger screen is needed, s will also be able to mirror their iOS or Android device, making it easier to enjoy video calls or online classes. The TV has standard HDMI ports to connect traditional devices, but the StanbyME is rated to only last three hours before needing to be recharged again. LG has yet to announce pricing details or a release date.
A Flexible Viewing Experience
On its own, this is a cool concept. 27 inches is much larger than tablet devices and the TV provides a better viewing experience than using a tablet or smartphone. Not to mention, the portability makes it far more accessible than a traditional TV as it can be rolled around and used in different rooms. However, and although three hours of battery is perfectly fine for a movie, LG probably should have packed in a larger battery, providing a larger one could have been added without compromising the portable nature of the TV or the adjustability of the stand.
In reality, those in need of longer sessions will likely be better off using a tablet, which typically offers up to ten hours of battery life on a single charge. Another option would be to simply watch content on a traditional large-screen television. That said, the StanbyME TV could prove to be a worthwhile compromise for those in need of greater portability and a larger screen. As is often the case, however, pricing is likely to play the ultimate role in determining just how worthwhile LG's new portable TV is.
