Legends of Tomorrow, more than any other series in the Arrowverse, is a true ensemble show. While Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and more all have a team centered around one hero, Legends has a constantly changing team of heroes, wandering through time and saving the day. As well as creating some more interesting battles and keeping things fresh, this rotating team also makes friendships the heart of the show.
Sure, there are some romantic relationships going on at the same time, but often it's the friendships that really drive things - and that make the fans happiest. From old pairs to some new additions, these are the pairings of the Waverider that fans love... and a few that just didn't quite work.
Worst: Kendra & Ray
Hawkman and Hawkgirl weren't a big hit with the fandom in general, but Kendra's friendship with Ray was an added subplot that... just didn't work. It was pushed as both a friendship and a romance - which was hard to swallow, given the fact that Carter (Hawkman) was meant to be her one true love through dozens of lifetimes. This pairing just seemed a little forced, and as though no one was sure what to do with Kendra - so no wonder it didn't really work.
Best: Gary & Constantine
Gary may have started on the show as pure comic relief, but he's become a fan-favorite character, and his dynamic with Constantine is a huge part of that. Gary managed to get Constantine to take him on as apprentice through magical means, and is consistently surprising - although he seems to be a scared and wimpy dude, he is now working with some seriously powerful magic, and is steadfast in his of his grumpy British mentor. This friendship gives depth to both characters, as well as providing great comedy.
Worst: Martin Stein & Jax
While many fans loved Martin and Jax as Firestorm, in many ways this pairing was just a little... predictable. The athletic kid with a chip on his shoulder, the older scientist who saw the best in him... it's classic odd couple, and it's been done a thousand times. The characters themselves were phenomenal, but as a pairing, they didn't really bring anything new to the series, and when they left, it wasn't the worst thing.
Best: Ray & Nate
Ray and Nate aren't just one of the best friendships on Legends of Tomorrow, they are one of the best friendships on the small screen. These two adorable dorks bond over their nerdiness and their sheer excitement over being superheroes - and they make no secret of how much they care about each other.
Unlike many fictional male friendships that are mired in toxic masculinity and typical gendered behavior, Ray and Nate are openly affectionate, talk to each other about their relationships and feelings, and worry about each other on missions, and it's amazing to see.
Worst: Nate & Behrad
In many ways, Behrad is something of a new stand in for Ray, after he left the Legends, and it's just not the same. While he's a great guy, his friendship (and character) is too new to really bond with Nate, and of course, the way he was introduced left fans unwilling to really get attached. The awareness that he had replaced Zari due to a timeline issue meant that fans were waiting for Zari to return and Behrad to leave. Now, however, that he has been officially settled into this timeline, perhaps this friendship will be able to really blossom.
Best: Mick & Charlie
Mick isn't someone who makes friends easily - his tendancy to fight everyone in sight and refuse to talk gets in the way of that. However, he and Charlie managed to forge a real bond - probably because she is as angry and likely to start a fight as he is! Seeing them both start to connect was amazing... and a close runner up on this would also be Mick and Mona. Her wide eyed kindness to him was adorable, but more than that, seeing them bond over his romance novels was truly incredible (especially when it comes to providing Mick with some more depth).
Worst: Sara & Rip
Rip Hunter was the original leader of the Legends, although he was quickly replaced by Sara Lance. At first, it seemed as though he and Sara would have a great friendship - one that was about responsibility, leadership, overcoming pasts, and so much more... and then Rip turned out to be a big ol' liar, self-serving, and obsessed with revenge. Their friendship took some serious hits, and it just couldn't recover from everything that Rip did.
Best: Mick and Snart
One of the best friendships in the entire Arrowverse, that of Heatwave and Captain Cold made it through a shift from villainy to heroics, from the Flash to Legends, and across all time - and that's just the start of how incredible this is. Opposites in many ways, these two were as close as brothers, having first met as young criminals.
They formed the perfect partnership, were always there to help each other out, and when Snart died to save the legends, even the hard-bitten Mick was heartbroken.
Worst: Zari & Mick
While some of the friendships on the Waverider seem natural and perfect, Zari and Mick is one that just feels a little bit... forced. There's no real reason that these two would connect, and yet they are often seemingly thrown together. While Mick has some great dynamics with other team , it would be nice to see this pairing either die off... or actually become something worthwhile.
Best: Sara & Constantine
Finally, Captain Lance and John Constantine - a truly incredible friendship, even if it doesn't always look like one! John and Sara both have a real experience with inner darkness that creates an intense bond, and their experiences of magic, resurrection, death, and battle bring them closer and closer together. It's also worth mentioning that this friendship occasionally becomes something more, and it's fantastic to see friends who can enjoy some casual fun without it having to become a huge drama in the series (especially when this behavior is so in character for both of them. This connection may not be as sleepover-and-makeover as, say, Ray and Nate's, but it's all the more powerful for being unique.
