SpongeBob “Sweet Victory” Cover Shows Musical Potential Of Majora’s Mask
The song “Sweet Victory” has become something of a meme thanks to SpongeBob SquarePants, having skyrocketed in popularity after it was featured in the 2001 episode "Band Geeks". Many remixes have been created since then, with the latest being Offbeat Drill’s own cover. Performed by David Glen Eisley, the rock song was originally co-written by Eisley and Bob Kulick in the late 90s. In the cartoon, meanwhile, SpongeBob and various other residents of Bikini Bottom performed the song in red marching band outfits. This image has subsequently become heavily associated with the song, particularly SpongeBob in his role as vocalist. As a result of this popularity among fans, the SpongeBob SquarePants game Cosmic Shake’s BFF Edition includes a SpongeBob statue of SpongeBob in his marching band costume, alongside many other exclusive toys and collectibles.
In Majora’s Mask, Link begins the game in possession of the Ocarina of Time, and gains access to more instruments as he acquires the three transformation masks found throughout Termina. The Deku Pipes, Goron Drums, and Zora Guitar all serve the same purpose in of game mechanics, only differing in appearance and sound. Of course, music is an important part of the Legend of Zelda franchise, with many Hylian tunes possessing magical properties. The instruments said music is played on can be equally mystical in nature, like the famous Ocarina of Time or the Instruments of the Sirens found in Link’s Awakening. There are many other, similarly powerful musical instruments in the Legend of Zelda, all with unique properties of their own.
This cover of “Sweet Victory” is impressive from both a technical and creative standpoint. Offbeat Drill has demonstrated their compositional skills in an unusual way, reconstructing the popular rock song with only four instruments and a limited range of notes. The fact that the cover is recognizable regardless is a testament to both their skill and the musical potential of Majora’s Mask. Despite being decades old, the classic gaming title continues to prove that it can provide new and unique entertainment. Fans of both the Legend of Zelda and SpongeBob SquarePants will no doubt appreciate this perfect musical cover in Majora’s Mask.
