Left 4 Dead 2, released more than a decade ago, is confirmed to receive its first content update in years, according to a recently revealed trailer. That is at least somewhat of a relief for fans since Valve has multiple times denied the rumors it was working on Left 4 Dead 3.
Earlier this year, a series of rumors appeared to be suggesting the return of the Left 4 Dead franchise in the form of a sequel, which was subsequently debunked by Valve. Representatives of the company shared an official statement claiming that they were not working on anything L4D-related, including a supposed Left 4 Dead 3 project. This was later reiterated once more in a separate interview where Valve developers clarified that they simply used several Left 4 Dead assets for internal Source 2 tests. But while the company is not planning on a sequel, there’s some new content for Left 4 Dead 2 coming soon.
A sudden official update has been recently published on the Left 4 Dead 3 from Valve.
While it has already been officially confirmed that a Titled Back 4 Blood, the anticipated game is expected to take the core features and mechanics of Left 4 Dead as a foundation and elevate the experience to a whole new level thanks to modern technologies and gameplay innovations. At the very heart, Back 4 Blood will remain a 4-player co-op FPS focused on fighting off hordes of zombies, although there isn’t any specific information for the time being.
One might cautiously imagine that releasing new content for an 11-years-old Left 4 Dead 2 game suggests that Valve is preparing for a bigger announcement, but in reality, it’s highly unlikely that the company will abandon its own statements regarding the status of Left 4 Dead 3. It is especially worth noting that The Last Stand DLC is only coming thanks to community efforts, as it is literally made by fans, for fans. Valve simply acts as an intermediary in this situation to bring new content through official channels, which clearly means that Back 4 Blood by Turtle Rock is ultimately the only option to get a proper sequel to the iconic franchise.
Left 4 Dead 2 is available on PC and Xbox 360 (and on Xbox One via backward compatibility).
