Prior to the launch of most awarded game in history. However, fans of the Factions multiplayer mode from the first The Last of Us are still eagerly waiting on news about the multiplayer, and wondering if it will be released this year.
Unfortunately there hasn't been any news regarding The Last of Us 2 multiplayer in quite a while. Players were hopeful that an announcement would be made last year on September 26th, aka The Last of Us Day. The celebration of the fictional infection reaching critical mass in the Last of Us universe proved disappointing to fans hoping for game news. Naughty Dog released plenty of merchandise to celebrate, but remained mum on the multiplayer mode.
Game director Neil Druckmann kept hope alive though by teasing that a multiplayer announcement was coming in the foreseeable future. Nearly five months have ed now, and there has been no other official word on the subject. It would make sense for Naughty Dog to target this year if the multiplayer was connected to The Last of Us 2, but if it has evolved into a larger project, then there's no way of telling when it might release.
When to Expect Details on The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer
At this point it's really anyone's guess as to when Naughty Dog decides to reveal what they've been working on. After the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, it is possible many developers will be more careful in the future so they will not repeat the missteps of CD Projekt Red. If the multiplayer initially planned for The Last of Us 2 has indeed become a rather ambitious project, Naughty Dog is most likely being very careful in managing expectations. It isn't unreasonable to assume Naughty Dog might simply wait until the project is nearly finished, or at least in a playable state, before it is even revealed.
PS5 upgrade rumors for The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding surfaced recently, and if it turns out there is any truth to those rumors, that might be a good time for Naughty Dog to also reveal what sort of multiplayer they've been working on. A true optimist's outlook would be believing those rumors are leading to a The Last of Us Part II upgrade in the coming months, and the long-awaited multiplayer right there with it.
