A new mod has come out that makes Jesse from immersive gameplay and narrative have won its developer Naughty Dog multiple awards, and widespread recognition across the world.

One of the biggest draws of The Last of Us 2 is its characters. And while certain characters were more divisive than others, some charmed players with their realism and wit. One such TLOU2 character was Jesse, a resident of Jackson and a friend of Ellie's. When Ellie and Dina leave Jackson for Seattle, Jesse follows to offer his assistance. He ultimately meets his early fate after a gunshot wound to the head, but his legacy lives on in his son with Dina. But now, thanks to a crafty modder, Jesse's status has been upgraded from a friendly but doomed sidekick to a playable The Last of Us Part 2 character.

The mod in question by TheMagicalBlob (Via GamesRadar) shows The Last of Us Part 2’s Jesse taking on the role of hero as he follows in Ellie’s Seattle footsteps. While it is most certainly Jesse’s character that can be seen aiming his arrows at various of the hostile WLF, the original game’s audio is still present in the mod. NPC’s can be heard shouting “It’s her” and “She’s here,” clearly referencing Ellie, as though it is still her character model attacking them.

This is not the first time that a The Last of Us Part 2 modder has swapped out Ellie for a traditionally non-playable character. In March, someone swapped Ellie’s body for that of Joel’s. This offered fans the chance to see Joel from beyond the grave. Again, female pronouns were used by NPCs, and Joel’s voice was not that of Troy Baker’s, but it was visually very impressive.

While Jesse’s presence in The Last of Us Part 2 may not have been as impactful as the near lack of Joel’s was, it is still fun to see a different character in a lead role. Fans are still eagerly awaiting news on a sequel to The Last of Us Part 2 or, at the very least, a multiplayer component akin to the original game’s Factions. But, while they wait, mods can keep The Last of Us Part 2 an interesting and fun escape.
